How about an omnibus safety course in high school? Not prerequisite to exercising any rights, however. Just useful knowledge every adult should have...

For starters syllabus could include: safe shootin', safe drivin', safe sex, consumer electronics and bodies of water, plastic bags and you, and the ins-and-outs of running with scissors.

At one time there use to be a hunter safety course offered when I was in High School(1988). Wonder what happened?

Last time I went I was walking up the sidewalk outside and some guy in front of me adjusted his coat, unseating his .38 which clattered onto the concrete. He retrieved it with his finger on the trigger. Then inside a guy got caught with a loaded gun still on him and got into it very hotly with the police, and was escorted out. I haven't been back.

As for mandatory training to own, last time I checked you had to have driver's ed to be behind the wheel but that didn't stop some clueless nitwit from totaling my car last week. You can't point out the obvious to the oblivious.

I am going to change the expression I use for describing bemused, uncomprehending wonderment from "like monkeys staring at a monolith" to "like Cletii staring at a clearing barrel."

"I hate to interrupt your smoke break there, Jasper, but I need to use that sand barrel in yore sittin' bench so's I can gas up my heater."

I would poop a clean brick if the NRA or somebody started putting on free classes for gun safety and orientation. It pisses me off that nobody wants to help people learn safety on a free basis...everything costs too dang much. Its silly to think that tacticool people spend a small fortune on a nice gun and cant afford the training, but maybe some free training would help.

They can't/ won't even teach actual HISTORY, it now has become their version of politically correct history. Forget about what the Civil War was really about and what it was ACTUALLY started, but rather teach the students about the PC Liberturd version!!!

I can tell you both what happened. The libtards took over, thats what happened. Right along side of spare the rod spoil the child, (OK, not that bad for some abusive idiots) everyone gets an award, zero tolerance, etc.

Did you just pass on the purple or are you really serious.
Lots of training available by qualified people who make an honest dollar for the effort.

Dick Metcalf! I didn't know you had an INGO account!

I've been meaning to ask you, how many hours of government-mandated comparative religious instruction would you require people to undergo before they were allowed to choose a house of worship?
Comrade Tamarova: Did you not heed ze directive of ze Politburo? Religion is ze opiate of ze masses. Any houses of vorship vill be allowed to remain open only insofar as zhey serve ze interests of ze State.

To each their own, but I personally didn't see a need for purple in my fellow Devil Dog's post. Just out of curiosity, I jumped on the NRA website to look at prices for the NRA's Basic Pistol course. The last time I looked (several years ago) it was around $50. Now the lowest I found was $110, and Guy Relford is charging $175 for an 8-hour "this is the end the ouchy things we call bullets come from" *BASIC* pistol class., with the median price being somewhere around $125-150 among the instructors I looked at in the central Indiana area.

Having been a full-time teacher myself, I absolutely have no problem with professional instructors getting paid to teach, but to me...

The NRA's most basic class should not be so expensive that it close to the cost for a used gun, and should not be a barrier to new gun owners receiving a basic education about their new purchase. :twocents:
