I think the article said it was the police who shot out the windows to let in water from the hoses. Sound like they were trying to act fast to get some water in to put out the fire, but from the looks of it, it didn't help much.

Tough loss. I feel sorry for the guy, but hopefully his insurance will cover it.

The wealthy are different from you and I. Now he'll just have to buy something off the shelf (like the rest of us). A used royal yacht perhaps. I have a 1977 Harpoon Whaler 5.2. I could be persuaded to let it go for say $2500.......no motor, just sails.

    Mehh........I'm sure the insurance'll cover it's part.....

If he's got 24 Mill ta pizz 'way on a boat.......cain't say's I feel sorry fer the dude.....

So if someone stole $3000 worth of guns from you, I shouldnt feel sorry for you because I can only afford (1) $400 gun? :dunno:

If the guy became a millionaire by "stealing" his fortune that would be one thing. But I dont recall seeing info on how he got his fortune. He could have done it the old fashion way....EARNED IT or inherited it from his parent who EARNED IT.

He was a chairman of a semi conductor company. I'm not sure if he founded it or not, but clearly showed excellence in leadership and executive experience. If you become wealthy and hold all of your money You are deemed greedy and miserly. If you buy a 25 million Dollar yacht and create tons of jobs for skilled craftsmen, then people hate you for spending your money. It's a lose lose situation.

I saw a reference that he was worth $50 million, and this boat essentially represented 50% of his net worth. I'm not sure how accurate that is though as it is a single source.

oh come on, The wealthy are no different than us, just different numbers. They may have more diverse options to spend their money, but it doesn't make THEM different. I hope to be them some day. Keep in mind plenty wealthy people go broke every year too.

i built a custom home instead of buying one off the shelf. How is building a custom boat different than building a custom home? They both are long-term assets you plan to spend a lot of time in/on.

If it was owned by a family trust I wonder if that is a way to avoid inheritance tax and have your family still enjoy the $$$.

The guy worked his life to earn a living and he was successful at it. He retires and buys a boat to celebrate and enjoy his last years. I feel sorry for the guy. I work my butt off and hope one day to be as successful as him. I doubt it will happen but I say good for him enjoying his earnings. You can't take it with you.

I have known (fished with, hung out with etc...) children and grand children of some of the wealthiest families in Louisville and I wouldn't trade places with any of them...The more wealth you have the more worry you have...

Some of the "wealthiest" people I have ever met lived in a small shack out in the country with a single shot shotgun and a three legged dog being their only assets and they were happier than my buddy who inherited 25 million on his 25th birthday...(Apparently there is money in Bourbon..)

Money can't buy happiness but it can buy you "things" that make you happy....However, at the end of the day the items you buy can not ever fill that hole where happiness lives......I reckon the point being that the old "hang the rich" philosphy kind of falls by the wayside....Many (of the rich) are so miserable they end up hanging themselves....Not the ones that "created" the wealth...They stay pretty happy by buying things they always wanted (i.e. a big old yacht or a Boston Whaler from 1977) but the ones who just inherited it and honestly thought joy and happiness could be ordered on the phone from Macy's and delivered to the front door soon end up being pretty miserable (if they keep thinking happiness is something they can buy...)

    IMHO ofcourse.....

I just read that whole thing and danged if I don't sound like one of those wealthy self help guru's on late night TV....Change of plans findingzero......Send me 5 payments for of only $39.99 each and I will take your Whaler Yacht off of your hands and show you that happiness can be found by sending me a check...:):
