(B) The defendant has the burden of proving the defense of insanity by a preponderance of the evidence.

(C) Evidence of a mental disease or defect that is manifested only by repeated criminal or other antisocial conduct is not sufficient to establish the defense of insanity.

Based upon the early reports of what he said, he knew exactly what he was doing. He may have believed himself justified, but I would have to see a lot more to even question his capacity. Who knows? It may be out there, but this crime does not cry out for the insanity defense, just on its face.

This is a horrible thing. As sad as it is it will be even sadder how it will be used to divide us. We should all be coming together against a common enemy.

Exactly. Something like this should bring us together, not drive us apart.

Which common enemy? The shooter, or the politicians that offered up the lives of the 9 people that were killed by making the church a gun-free zone?

How about intolerance? We are living in an age where just being different is enough to get you killed by intolerant psycopaths.

A church of all places. The shooter is on a bobsled to Hell. I really hope this isn't racially motivated, but unfortunately I bet I'm wrong. I'm praying that coolers heads prevail, and that there isn't some retaliatory action.

Sad to say, but I think that there is no possibility of this not being a race related crime. I cannot imagine a person having that much hate built up inside them and hope I never encounter a person like that. If I do, I pray that I'm in a situation to protect my family and others.

With all respect, I disagree. Investigators will find all sorts of things wrong with his childhood, that distorted his perception of the world. It will reveal all sorts of strange things he did or believed that reflect undiagnosed schizophrenia (or something similar).

The more abhorrent the act is, the more likely the insanity defense will have traction. In my experience.
