Muzzle brake recommendations please!! Just bought my 1st bolt action .308

this would be at the top of my budget. and it looks better than those sideways soda cans i see sometimes. do you notice a big reduction in recoil?

Ross Schuler makes fine, economical breaks. I purchased one from him for my 450 BM. Google him and you won't find an ill word said about his products. And they work well.

Have you actually shot this rifle and decided that you need a break? I do not find the recoil of a .308 to be too offensive. Not trying to be insulting, just curious. Tank or shark style breaks are very effective but make the rifle look bad in my opinion.

I've never found 308's to have much recoil, but the Ross Schuler breaks mentioned above cost half what most sell for and have excellent reviews.

What is the rifle?

is it already threaded? This could add between $50-150 depending on who you have cut your threads...
I second Dirty Steve's advice and think you should shoot it first.

The recoil is quite moderate with the .308. Are you sure you need a break and the increase in noise?

the rifle is a ruger precision, so already threaded. Ive never shot .308. but if i am going out to longer ranges ive heard its hard to see the shot with out a brake to manage recoil.

How far do you expect to be shooting? I shoot a 30-06 out to 400 yards and have no problem seeing my shot. I rather have a better scope.

I'm with the other skeptics who have to wonder if a break is really necessary.
With that said, I would have suggested good old MagnaPort, were it not for your mention that it's already threaded.

A good recoil pad will get you a lot more "bang for the buck".

The question should be, do you plan on getting a suppressor? Does the Suppressor have a quick attach capability....If so, get a muzzle break that matches that.

Many brakes are considered 'loudeners' as they direct muzzle blast both at your neighbors and back to you. I have several 7.62NATO chambered weapons and only us a flash suppressor (not a brake) on one of those and have no issues with recoil.

I'd second the suppressor recommendation...now if they'd just get rid of the registration and taxation issues...

Here's an idea...............shoot it and see what it needs.

I know I can't spot hits with my sporter .243 win at 9X unless the shots are 200 ish or farther.

The "skeptics" are saying that the .308 recoil is not too offensive and does not preclude being able to see hits on target. I clearly saw a hit on an elk I dumped at 426 yards with a .30-06 several years ago. The recoil of the .30-06 is comparable to that of the .308. If you find that it is more than you can deal with, many brake brands are effective. Steer clear of one though with bottom ports if you plan to be shooting prone. You'll likely end up with a face full of dust and debris. Personally, I like the defensive edge brakes.
