I was talking to a fellow INGOer on Sat and he mentioned the Mosin. It seems there is a lot of mosin guys on here, and this guns seems to have a cult following.

So I started kinda looking into this gun. I looked at AIMsurplus and they have the octagonal barrel guns for 89 bucks. Should own like a dozen of these? How is the accuracy? How is the kick? Should I just drink the Kool-aid and have one stashed in every room in my house?

Thanks guys. I hope you understand some of what I said was in jest!!:D:ingo:

I just took my ex-sniper 91/30 down to Atterbury today. They are a fun, cheap to shoot rifle that gives a lot of bang for the buck. My son brought one home last January and we now have 7 in the house. They are like baseball cards in terms of being fun to collect. The kick in the long rifles (91/30, M39 etc...) is not too bad but the shorter M38, M44 and 91/59 can be pretty stout. Still though, not so bad as to be steered away from. My 12 year old son put over 100 rounds through my M44 one afternoon and he weighs maybe 95 lbs with the Mosin slung over his shoulder.

The are popular because they do not break the bank when you buy one, they do not break the bank when you shoot one, they are a lot of fun to shoot and are usually the loudest thing at the range, they are easy to maintain and they look good hanging on the wall between range trips. Then there is the whole history thing that makes them cool. Having a rifle that you can shoot that most likely saw combat during the Second World War is a nice way to gain a bit of appreciation for what that generation went through.

Its a cheap way to own some legitimate military history. A mosin was the milsurp entry for me, and now I want an AK and an enfield and about 5 more mosins... I dunno where the madness will end. These russian types are very addictive...

How else can you arm yourself and five of your friends for under $500?

That is what got me looking/thinking about getting one. I was looking at spam cans of ammo for 89 bucks! So for 180 bucks plus fees and taxes from AIM I can have a gun and 400 rds of ammo.

fun, cheap, cheap ammo, goes bang when you pull the trigger.

Very unsmooth action, sometimes need a hammer to cycle the action, kicks like a mule, very poor ergonomics, very impractical for actual use, limited to milsurp ammo, poor ballistics (compared to 8mm and 30-06).

Buts its a fun gun to shoot, and its so cheap its hard to go wrong. I had one for a few weeks but had to sell it, its just to cheap and in all honestly poorly built for my taste. :twocents:

Should I just drink the Kool-aid and have one stashed in every room in my house?

    Only one per room? :D

Only rifle I've ever been around that changes the barometric pressure.

Also, you won't need a tactical light if you use the right ammo!

I've had my Mosin for about 6 years now but only started shooting about a year back. It's a fun gun to shoot but only for a little bit. A gun store by me is havin a sale for 85 a piece. I got a buddy to pick one up too.

Dennis, What store has them for $85?

I just got my C+R, and it costs a at least $80 plus shipping for a bargain one online, though I'm leaning towards one of the really nice ones at Classicarms.com for $130.
I don't have enough of those things in my house, anyway.

fun, cheap, easy maintenance, and with a little determination, some patience, and a little elbow grease, you can do a little gun smithing and address some of the problems with the rifle.

I've built an M44. I have my trigger shimmed, did a nice mirror polish on the sear, (trigger is nice and crisp now) put on a synthetic stock, modern optics, free floated the barrel, eliminated the problematic "sticky bolt syndrome," polished/rebuilt the bolt, new firing pin spring, polished the inside of the reciever and chamber, converted to a bent bolt handle, and the rifle shoots great, and has even performed on par with some buddys' modern rifles. I threw a bipod and a slick camo paint job and the rifle looks pretty impressive, especially for it's age!

Cheap, easy, fun, makes a G R E A T project. I have had a lot of fun building mine. of course, there are always the purists that say to leave it alone, and I can appreciate that, but with a little work, you can greatly step up the accuracy of the rifle and built a hell of tack driver.

A+ for the mosin, as far as bang for the buck. I joined the dark side, and I'm hooked. I look to add a 91/30 to the family soon.

Lone man stands up amidst a group: "My name is Nick, and I'm addicted to mosin nagants."

    Group Replies: "Hi Nick!"

Dennis, thanks for the info. I'm going soon!

Nick, how much money did it cost to do all that? Did you pay a gunsmith to do it? If not, how did you learn? I'm all for purist, but heck, why not get a half dozen of the things and modify just one? How did you learn to do all that stuff? Could you put links up?

When I got my first one awhile back, I had never fired one before, so me and my brother-in-law took it to the range, and set up a 10"x10" target at 100yds, I shot 5 rnds then he did. There were 10 holes in the target. so, most of mine anyway, are pretty damn accurate. Oh, and whoever said they were cheaply made, tell that to the thousands of Axis soldiers who were bludgeoned to death with a mosin, I'm sure they would love to know that!

    Here is why...

They are pure awesome. That's why.:D

haha ok i will add also that, they are cheap, they are durable, they are historical, they are fun, they are intimidating, both the report and the sheer thought of shooting it, especially to someone who hasn't fired one before. Did I mention they are cheap? Want more reasons? Ok! Well also they are cheap to shoot with inexpensive ammo that to my knowledge is still plentiful. Loading them with stripper clips is fun. "or in my opinion anyway." Most people recognize them from Call of duty and Enemy at the Gates, and yeah they are just epic rifles that are a lot of fun. Go buy one now! :D

p.s: one more thing.... wanna know what I really like about them?

    During a night shoot, they make....really ******* huge FIREBALLS!:ar15:

go buy one shoot it more than once. decide right then what all the hype is about. if you decide you dont like it, sell it for what you payed and walk away with the experience of another gun. if you like it, you love it. weird but that is just the way it works.
