Cartoonist mentions to his coworkers that he is considering getting a .22 bolt action to target shoot with, soon there after he is fired.

He made a cartoon of the event.

Granted his words might have been ill chosen:

But without any questioning/consultation, he is canned:

I wish I was trying to make some hamhanded point here, but this is how it went down. I've been out on my butt for two weeks now.

He was not even talking about CCW, or "assault guns" or NRA membership. Those might have gotten him a visit from "security".

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have to be careful. Sometimes we all get talking about shooting and guns and hunting and then no work gets done. When I bring a new gun in my office, people from the other offices like to come in and look at it and then they start talking about going shooting and hunting and getting outside. Guns are really bad for the workplace. Wish I had room for a cartoonist on staff, I'd hire that guy.

Very fortunate myself as a firefighter most of us share the same passion with weapons, hunting, target shooting, and just the appreciation of fine works of art.

I work in IL....so guns are a no no in the workplace. It doesn't stop me from talking guns with my IN compadre. They already think that we are just hill jacks, so we end up kind of exaggerating the gun talk. I make fun of them for living in a commie state and I guess thaey make fun of us for living in a decently free state.... I will be getting a job in IN asap.....i'm really tired of Crook County.

Yeah we all definitely have to be careful.

A lot of us work with people that are just pissed off from the moment they wake up, and are just LOOKING for something to get bent up over.

Anyways, there are only a few people here at work that know I like guns, and only about 1 person that knows I own a handgun. . .

But, if the topic comes up, I will gladly talk to people about guns. I think its important that we (the gun educated) help teach the gun "uneducated" about how safe firearms can be when handled properly, and to convey the simple fun you can have with them.

I carry my gun with me to work, at work, and home from work, and I'm not a cop, just lucky enough to work in a place that is gun friendly. I can't imagine working in a place that is so hostile that you could be fired for TALKING about guns! Must be California.

"Loose lips sink ships." It really is wise to exercise caution in speech. You can't yell "Fire" in a crowded public building, for example (unless there really is a fire, of course). With the onset of office cubicles, eavesdropping has become as common as malingering at the water cooler. Such eavesdropping leads to hearing only parts of a conversation. When these parts are passed on as gossip, amazing things are communicated.

In the cartoon, it is assumed that the eavesdropper heard the complete conversation. Consider what could have been heard, with what it could have been combined, and the fear a gossip could generate with those variables. The management is wrong to fire based on such flimsy evidence (another good reason for having union protection), but the speaker was very unwise to discuss that subject within the cubicle environment.

Of course, one can assert the man has a right to speak his mind and he has a right to keep and own firearms. He has those rights, but there is wisdom in discretion. When I CCW to a local government office where CCW is not allowed, I secure the weapon in a safe place in my car. I do this discretely, quietly and naturally. I do not wave the weapon about or tell my companion, "Wait! I have to my piece in the care because I can't carry in there."

I suggest a bit more wisdom and discretion.:twocents:

A job I had a few years ago they actually ask us if we carried a gun. If so we could apply for a wavier to carry at work. They said it was some insurance issue but if they knew up front it was not a prob. To be if I have not known on of the staff member really well I would have never admitted to having a LTCH. I am not sure if they still have the same policy but it would surprise me if they do.

Where I work, if they fired people that talk about firearm they would have to fire almost the whole department of about 50 plus. It is well known that most of us are avid shooters.

All he wanted was to talk to his representative about a political issue — something supposedly guaranteed by the First Amendment’s right to petition clause. Posted by David Codrea, Guns&Ammo writer. The final story is that he tried several times to contact his elected rep., and was summarily "identified, targeted, surveilled, and finally deprived of ALL his gun-collection. Don't think it can't happen -- and it may be YOU. Pat

It makes me thankful every day that I work for the state. I carry to and from work every day, there are many of us that carry daily. Also, everyone in our division is a gun nut. We have 31 people in our division and 29 have guns.
