I don't know as much about politics as some on this forum, but I have liked what Mitch Daniels has done for the state. He has fought for fiscal responsibility and done a fine job, and he gave us the right to carry in parks. Those two alone make me respect the guy. Anybody have any thoughts on next steps for him? He swears another political office is not in his future, which I can understand, but I think itd be a shame. I'd like to see him take a Senate seat or even make a White House run.

I don't think you'll ever see him earn a dime outside of politics or token pay back positions to people he's taken care of while he was suppose to be representing the people of the state. I don't care for him for all the same reasons you seem to like except I'd count him a failure on every one of them.

Selling of the stock pile of value collected with generations of taxpayers resources isn't fiscal responsibility. It's treason. Those "predictions" of the cost for the war in Iraq! ROTFL, no honest working person could have even look you in the eye and make those out loud. That's proof enough for me he's a sell out who would crook his own grandma for his own benefit financially or politically.

Show me where our founders thought it was the duty for local, state, and federal governments to maintain "public" lands, parks, forests, etc. The land belongs to the people and thus should be privately owned. I should not have to subsidize your desire to hike, hunt, shoot, camp or whatever it is that you do on public ground.

What county do you live in? My county is broke thanks to Mitch witholding funds that normally are returned to the counties. Now we are facing a County Option income tax to make up the deficit our county employeees haven`t had a pay increase in over 2 years.

Maybe your county needs to watch what they spend their money on more closely.

You've probably seen my posts before on state government.

Work for INDOT, 31+ years. No pay raise for the last two. Stopped the matching funds in our Deferred-Comp this year. Stopped the take home vehicles this year. The cutbacks are not over yet folks.

Toll road lease which gave us all 3.4 billion dollars. Privatized quite a few state jobs.
Privatized the FSSA by giving a contract to IBM. This did not work so it was taken away from IBM.

Guess what? I put all the above in the same basket labeled "WAY TO GO MITCH"!

I know first hand of the waste that was allowed by the previous democrat administrations of Bayh, O'Bannon and Kernan. I'm glad someone got elected to put a stop to it.

But if they get the office again, we'll be broke just like before. They can't wait to get their hands on the 1.3 billion the state has left. Wait and see.

Wow. Has everyone forgotten the IPL scandal so soon? He made millions while men and women who worked all their lives were deprived of their retirements with no notice of a sale?

He is a politician. Those in the know will profit those outside the circle will continue to swing hammers

Mitch has done a good job even though many people who live in the "region" don't want to admit to it. This state has never been a national hub of industry. What little we had has suffered the same problems the rest of the rust belt. Our farmers have supported this state more than many would like to admit. Our systems of government overlap to the point that something had to break before long. It's time for the people to realize that we can not have everything we want all of the time. Mitch has been the first to step up and say it out loud and follow up with corrective actions.

On a side note can we get one of the little yellow guy's stirring up a hornets nest? It would fit this thread nicely?

Not my intent. As I said in my post, I know I am not as well informed as some. I try to keep up to date enough on matters that impact my rights to be a responsible voter, but I know that others are far more involved than I am. That's why I wanted to hear more opinions. Just trying to learn.

I didn't mean to imply that the reason you posted this question was to stir something up. However it has. I do enjoy reading the views of fellow members if I agree with them or not. If we cannot listen we cannot learn.

    Thanks for a good thread!

Ft Branch is awfully close to a VERY blue part of this map.
Saying it is Mitch's fault your county is hurting financially, is a lot like blaming the bank that you are late on your payment!

Get your own house (county) in order, before looking to blame the neighbor (Mitch) for your own spending habits.

Dude, you are nearly surrounded by the blue counties.
Think some of that mentality might be seeping in?

    I'm just sayin' :dunno:

If I didn`t pay my bills I would show a fat balance in my checkbook too. That`s exactly what Mitch did. Are you aware that several counties considered filing suit against the state for delenquent payments for DOC reinbersments?
Or are you aware that Gibson county has more miles of roads than any county in the state yet Marion county gets the bulk of the highway money?

I'm in Morgan, step daughter-in-law (is that correct?) and her husband both work for the county and if I promise not to give their names both support Daniels. As for pay increase, I've not had one in 3 yrs myself, due to economics I'm told:dunno:. In following the articles in the Star it sounds like the township form of government that Hoosiers are so stubbornly defending are keeping a lot of revenue in reserve for ? Eliminate the township system, reduce government and government spending, follow a budget like the rest of us then tell us you need more money!

That`s a part of Mitch`s problem eliminating township goivernment is a step towards government from the top down insted of from the people up.

The bottom line is that government is bloated. Cutting is good. We'll all be surprised at how much government we can live without.

The township system needs to go away. It is just a way for local thugs to keep control of their fiefdom's.

I`m sorry but I still believe in government of the people by the people. Dismantling local government and governing from the top down is a horrible idea.
