I just heard a police spokesman talking about the bomber on the news, and he said that they were working to try to determine why he did it. I heard the same thing about the Florida shooter, and probably others as well.

I would ask any person to explain to me the value of that information. What possible mitigation measures could be expected to result?

If her were persuade to do these acts by some fringe group, would you not see the value in that?

So, if the guy was motivated by Isis, that means our govt is going to try EVEN HARDER to fight Isis?

ISIS is already known to us. There are just too many variables unknown, without following up with motivation. We should know why things are done, and not simply be content with things being done. At the very least, it helps provide information for prevention in the future. If a guy is out bombing people because he hates a certain group of people (which is motivation) I'd like to know it.... moreso, if I'm in the group of people he's bombing.

And for the record, I'm clear he was randomly bombing people.

He left a 25-min video confession right? Surely that would be covered?

OK, after thinking for a bit, I know that you're right (and Acteon too), and it is better to know what it's possible to know. I guess for no other reason than that you wouldn't know if the reason was useful until you knew what it was. When I first posted my comment, I was thinking in terms of what's most likely (in my mind), that the guy is some strange loner who never quite fit in, or who wasn't raised right by his parents in some way. And, I was mostly focusing on the reason being a societal or cultural thing, that there's not as much of a practical or doable solution for.

Sometimes I like to just throw things against the wall and see what sticks. I guess that's one I might have seen that wasn't so sticky if I'd waited a minute before I threw it.

It is good to know as much as possible about these nutjobs, if for no other reason that it could help catch the next one more quickly.

Hey 'Mo! You hear any more about this?

Hate to bump this thread for what seems a bit like a thread-jack but more info released... it was a suicide attempt. He left a short note in the car pointing to a long suicide note on his laptop. He died on the 21st; suicide by hanging. Seems like he was looking for a quick and painless way out (explosion) and when that didn't pan out he resorted to the tried & true (as sickening as that sounds) suicide by hanging...

Time for a little update. Texas DPS released some more aerial footage, this time of the last moments of the bomber. I wonder if that cop's ears have stopped ringing yet?
