So pissed. Mine just arrived. Looked like the box had been thru a war zone. Open box up and the radio and directions aren't even its packaging and the battery is missing. So ticked right now. Wanted to play with this thing tonight

Damn!!! Did you order through Amazon?

No. I had just got my eBay bucks so decided to use them and get the radio basically for free. Found a good reputable seller and went that route. From the way the packaging is, i have to believe was somewhere once in Ups possession. Sent email to ebay seller. See what response i get to determine the end level of how mad i am! I have had 2 issues in the past with buying on ebay, out of several hundred, and its always worked out. Have had to get ebay involved on one and they took care of it. Guess we shall see.

Something I've done with friends is a loaner radio that was passed around to those who weren't sure if they wanted to get started in radio or not. Would anyone here be interested in that? Get the radio in the mail, play with it for a while then mail it to whoever is next.

I have a Baofeng GT-3 and a standard UV-5R+ that I don't use. The GT-3 is programed for satellites right now but I haven't been listening recently, probably won't much once it gets colder.

I can start a thread to keep track of things. I can box them up and mail them to someone to try out. Keep it for a while, play with it, reprogram it if you want to. See if you like it then you would be responsible to mail it to the next person who wants to try one out. If there's no one else who is interested then ship it back to me and I'll send it out again when there is more interest.

It's a way to get your feet wet and see what the radios are like and if you may be interested in the hobby. Of course you are responsible for transmitting (or not) depending on your license. There are other things you can do with them besides the ham frequencies. Listen to the NOAA channels, some places still have analogue police & fire, you can find business frequencies, all kinds of stuff.

    Any interest?

Do y'all hand out a few to family members or do you just stick with the one for keeping track of local emergency info & contacting other "like minded" INGOtarians?

Geez do we have a radio section yet?

Also I would have jumped on that group buy if it was for the 8 watt or a 10 watt

I've given away several to friends trying to get them involved. So far no one has gotten their license yet. I put their local repeaters in memory, along with any public service freqs, NOAA, GMRS & MURS. I lock out the transmit on the ham & public services. I have no family that's interested at all, not even listening.

I don't have a 10 watt but do have an 8 watt. I did a comparison up thread between the 5 & 8 watt radios. When using then as a HT the extra power doesn't do anything special. It's better to save the $$ and upgrade the antenna instead.

Meh, doesn't really matter. Parents are in their low 80's so I never expected them to have an interest. Best I could do was a new scanner for dad a few years ago for Christmas. The friends all work longer hours and have busy lives once they get home. Sister is a nurse in Indy and her husband is IMPD, a 2 year old and another on the way, they will never have time to take the test or even talk if the did.

I'm joining a ham club at the next meeting in Greenville OH. Been to a couple meetings and it's a nice club. I'm 48 and besides one other guy I've met, I'm the youngest by 20 years. I'd like to find other clubs that are more active next spring. I want to get involved in fox hunting and some other projects. I'd like it to be a useful hobby. No HF yet so everything is just local.

In for at least one on the group buy, maybe two.

So I will probably get off my butt and take the exam. Wife tolerates my prepping but no way is she taking an exam. Do I buy two for us to talk to each other or just one for monitoring and keeping up on info?
