Obviously, the vast majority of that is BS. The problem is, what happens if 1% (10,000) tries to go through with it?

Well, since they announced a date and time, I'm sure things are being arranged.
Since opening up with Ma Deuce, and Apache helicopters would be bad "news", probably multiple layers of defense.
With the outer layers being water cannon.
More danger as you get through the layers.
A LOT of pissed off servicemen that are unhappy with having canceled liberty (time off).
A LOT of plastic handcuffs.

With all that sand around there, a few low choppers would be tough to get through.
A couple high speed strafing runs would be cool and then the sound cannons.
And like you said - arrest a few hundred and the rest might rethink how they want to proceed.
Hopefully there won't be any need to get serious.

I would think the military could deploy CS very effectively from helicopters using the rotor wash to assist. Having already run a mile or two in the desert, I'm betting the effects on the protesters would be even worse than baseline
