The "well regulated militia", I took that as back then, that WAS the then "national guard" that could be called up by the government, (as it was for the revolutionary war) to defend the nation. However, since it was to be controlled by the government, "the right of the people to keep and bare arms" was the check to keep the government from turning bad.
As the militia was "necessary for the security of a free state"... our right "should not be infringed"... should the state go rouge.
Either way, it's something they don't teach.
