      INGO HAM Radio Club

I finally got around to setting up an HF radio and antenna two weeks ago today in a temporary situation (radio on dining room table and center-fed dipole in a tree). I've already made 125 QSO's with 28 states and 30 countries. I'll probably never go back to VHF/UHF after this. LOL!

Above is the repeater. I've heard repeaters farther than that one clear as a bell, but haven't tried yet to see if they can hear me. I routinely talk to my cousin at 10 miles on simplex with my smaller 15" antenna.

I just checked into the ARES net on that same repeater a moment ago using the Slim Jim antenna and net control copied my comments just fine.

I did it with THIS ONE, but had a much better time with THIS ONE at 20 feet up a tree.

I have a 5-watt Yaesu handheld with which I can consistently hit a repeater 47.5 miles from my home.

Congratulations on passing Technician. Keep studying for General while the material is still fresh in memory. I have a nice base radio and power supply, but have been waiting on nice weather to string up a dipole. In the meantime, I have 80+ repeaters within a 50-mile radius stored in my...

      Knobstone Trail

I hiked in and camped overnight very near the dam of Celina Lake in 2018, but didn't hike the loop. I'll definitely be going back for that, but I'll be sure to time it when ticks and chiggers aren't bad. The reviews I've read of that loop say it is very tick infested.

I just ordered the following: Icom IC-7300 transceiver Astron RS-35M-AP power supply I guess there's no turning back now. LOL!

      ATN Thermal Scopes

That would be my advice as well. Save up around $500 more than your current budget and be happy. I've read too many ATN horror stories to buy one. I am the owner of a Pulsar Thermion XP50 thermal riflescope.

Let's say that I want to cover all the bands that an IC-7300 is capable of with minimal tuning. How many antennas will I need? As mentioned earlier, I live in a rural area surrounded by large farms. I'm on a decent hill overlooking a large, open valley. I only have one acre, but an adjoining...

Yeah, I remember from studying for the tests that multi-band antennas pretty much suck. I live out in the country, so it shouldn't be much of a problem to set up band-specific antennas, other than coming up with the cash to do so. LOL! I just started reading this last night...

      Knobstone Trail

Yeah, I knew that there was at least one woman offering shuttles on the KT. Our problem is that we have to hire someone to come in and take care of our cats anytime we're gone for anything longer than an overnight. We do that once or twice a year to hike the Smokies, but never have for in-state...
