Nice try but doesn’t work. Are you saying the 2A is just a law? It is a enumerated right, not a simple law…

Until the law is revised, you have to follow it...
It's "legal" for bicyclists to ride in the road under the conditions outlined in the law.
Once you exceed the law you are no longer "legal".

This is exactly why I quit road riding as have many others. But isn’t the acceptance of this a bit like blaming a rape victim of wearing to short of a skirt?
So you’re saying people should be able to dress like sluts and not have any responsibility at all? It’s the rapist’s fault. Period. On a practical level did it raise the likelihood of getting raped at least a little?

It’s the distracted driver’s fault for hitting the cyclist. Did driving on the busy road increase the likelihood of getting hit? You can be right. You can be dead right.

Out of curiosity… Is there anything that could be done that would appease both sides?
Short answer, NO. Funny you should ask that. A few posts back I said ”It doesn’t matter what cyclists do, motorists will complain”. I say that after 30 years of cycling. Now as much as they complain about cyclists on the road, just watch how loud they complain about the building of bike routes. Several threads on that topic here.

The other thing I chuckle about is there are other permissible roadway uses, farm equipment, and my favorite, moving herds of animals. It would blow the mind of these complainers if people were moving their livestock while others were racing home to their McMansion after work several times a year.:lmfao:

But this is really the entire point, in a nutshell. People do use the roads for these other permissible uses. I've been on back roads behind farm equipment plenty of times. I know farmers who use the roadway for moving livestock, farm equipment, etc. But you don't hear nearly so much complaining about those darn farmers taking up the roadways. You know why?

It's because a farmer will never look at a winding, busy highway during rush hour and think "Ah yes, that's the perfect time and place to move my combine to the other field 3 miles down."

A farmer wouldn't ever say something like "Well, I can't run my cattle down the back road, because there might be potholes or debris, and I don't want my cows getting nails stuck in their hooves. Besides, it's perfectly legal for me to use the highway, and I have just as much right to be on there at rush hour as anyone else, so you cage people need to get over yourselves."

    That's the difference.

And you are making points that just are not true. They may be true in your ancedotal world but not the entire world. It is preposterous that all farmers sit in the field waiting on rush hour to end to use the state road to move their combine and other big equipment, though not saying some don’t. I have been behind them, so I have seen firsthand they exist and have personally operated such in my life.

Do you think it funny and unusual that a bicycle may crash from flat tires caused by potholes, rocks, glass, nails and other sharp debris on roads?

So you take joy in the pain of others?

Mike, that’s an ugly thing to say to someone else…especially considering your intended target.

Do you really think the stakes involved in this conflict warrant that level of response?

It looks to me like the thread is getting under your skin a bit too much, and emotions are starting to get the better of your responses…maybe a break from the thread would help, I know it helps me when I dig my own heels in a bit too deeply.

I was making generalizations. Like all generalizations, they have their exceptions.

There are undoubtedly some farmers out there who show an utter lack of regard for the disruption they might be causing to traffic.

There are also many cyclists out there who are courteous, kind, and go above and beyond to ensure everyone's safety and respect the principle purpose of our main roads, which is not recreation, but allowing efficient, speedy transportation from one place to another. I have met several; I like to think I am one myself (or at least was one, it's been a while since I biked regularly.)

I wouldn't even say that the majority of cyclists are inconsiderate or rude. Not nearly. But the percentage among them does seem, in my anecdotal world, to be a lot higher than other non-motorist users of the road, like farmers. It seems like I'm not the only one with this experience, either.

No, I just don't like that possibility to be used as an excuse for rude behavior.

I object to the premise that motor vehicles have superior rights to other legal uses of public roadways.

It was part of a sincere explanation for why cyclists do some of what they do. Have you ever been responsible for leading a group of 20-30 riders? Have you ever been responsible for being the sweeper a group of 20-30 riders? It is a big responsibility to assist that many riders, trying to keep everyone safe.

I thought you really wanted to learn when you posted this but, if one rereads this, it just turned into a bash cyclists thread.

I object to the premise that motor vehicles have superior rights to other legal uses of public roadways.
And this is indicative of the divide. Public roads are designed and built for motor vehicles. They are paid for by drivers of motor vehicles. The roads are shared for other uses (which necessitates requisite courtesy and respect), but motor vehicles absolutely have superior rights in the use of public roadways.
