      Cva 35 rem.

A sweet load is the Hornady 180 gr SSP over 35 gr H4895. It has relatively low recoil yet leaves huge exit wounds on deer.

      35 Remington - 1.800"

My nephew shot a doe at about 50 yds today with a Hornady 180 gr. SSP over 39 gr H4895. It was a quartering away shot entering below the diaphragm and lodged in the opposite shoulder. It expanded perfectly. I haven't had a chance to weigh it but it appeared to have excellent weight retention...

      35 Remington - 1.800"

Here is an excellent article regarding bullet performance in the 35 Remington: 35 Remington Bullet Performance Part II: Handloads

      35 Remington - 1.800"

H4895 I found that 35 gr of H4895 with either the 200 gr Remington round nose or Hornady 180 SSP works great. Midsouth Shooters Supply had factory second Hornady 180 gr SSPs on sale for $92 or so for 500. In a lever gun they say to just load one pointed bullet in the magazine. This is a...

      35 Remington - 1.800"

35 Remington Magic I have been passing along the 35 Rem Marlin to my nephews. So far this year it has harvested 6 deer. We are very happy with this cartridge.

      35 Remington - 1.800"

I shot my deer with this cartridge using Remington 200 gr RNCL and let numerous relatives try it out. Six Smackdowns DRT and one double lung chest shot walked 30 yds or so. Sweetness!

      Advice on Elk Hunt

30'06 or 270 Win or 308 win I agree with the above. A 30'06 is on the edge of what most people can shoot well. A 270 is superb with a 150 gr bullet. The 308 win is nice as it fits in a short action and military surplus ammo is great for cheap practice. A top grade fixed 2.5 or 4 power scope...

      35 Remington - 1.800"

I'm using a 200 gr Remington round nose over 35 gr H4895. It seems to be the Hammer of Thor as it gives good smack down. I'm very impressed with the 35 Remington "short". Even with reduced loads it has plenty of smack down power. I see no need for anything with more blast and recoil. I hope...

      Bag Limits

I had an interesting discussion today with a fellow who owns land next to where I hunt. In that county you can kill up to eight deer. His concern is that if everyone in the area kill a bunch and also bring their friends and relatives in to kill a bunch that the local herd could be decimated and...

      35 Remington - 1.800"

The 35 Rem Rocks! I like the 35 Remington just the way that it is. Where I hunt 100 yards would be a very long shot so I shoot a throttled down mild load of 35 gr H4895 with either the 180 gr Hornady SSP (limiting the magazine to one round) or the 200 gr Remington round nose. Amazingly both...

      35 Remington - 1.800"

This sounds like a great idea. If the shortened cases are performing the same one could load up ten for hunting and use the regular for shooting. This is no big deal at all. I sure would like to do this with a bolt action. I love a fine trigger and fast lock time better than anything.

      35 Remington - 1.800"

Come to think of it if one uses a powder like Leverolution that is slow enough that there is not enough room in the case to put in too much, a full caseload would make a crimp unnecessary to protect against bullet setback as the powder would take care of that problem. It will be fun to see the...

      35 Remington - 1.800"

Lee Factory Crimp Die For about $25 Lee Precision will make a custom factory crimp die to fit the shortened 35 Rem. Just send them a dummy round and a check for the proper amount.

      Elk hunting hand loads

My friends and I have killed lots of elk and all of us have a pet rifle and load. One uses a 270 with the 150 Speer boat tail. Another uses a 30'06 with the Hornady 165gr flat base. I used a 30'06 with the Speer 180 gr boat tail for years until I unwittingly used some corrosive ammo one day and...

      Long range deer hunting...in Indiana??

I am considering going with a shortened 35 Remington using a hard cast 190 gr Ranch Dog bullet coasting along at 1800 fps or so. Recoil and noise should be light and with the large metplat on the Ranch Dog bullet expansion is not necessary. Hopefully the light recoil will make practice fun and...

      Wyoming Mule Deer, Which Caliber??

If I were to buy a rifle strictly for western deer hunting it would be a Savage in 25'06. A JLK 108 gr VLD has a B.C. of .500 and can be pushed over 3300 fps in that cartridge. The 108 JLK bullet is an accurate target bullet with a light J4 jacket so shot placement is critical- it needs to enter...

      Wyoming Mule Deer, Which Caliber??

I used to live in Wyoming and Montana and have killed lots of muledeer, antelope, and elk. For mulies and antelope anything from a .243 Win and up is fine. It is big country and range estimation will be quite difficult, so the flatter shooting the better. A 25'06 with 100 gr bullets would...
