Don't think of it as much as a fad as something different. Not a whole lot of innovation these days, just a lot of mimicry and whitewash. How many "custom" or "tactical" 1911 manufacturers are there these days? Reminds me of "filmmakers" remaking every '60s or '70s TV show or movie again...
XDs is a awesome pistol. It's at least as good as Glock for reliability with a barrel that offers more versatility (can use reloads). They have a mil/le/first responder program too.
CZ makes awesome pistols. CZ 85 Combat would my choice and the a P-07. They may not be selling the 85 Combat any longer however. No disconnect and a smooth trigger like the original model 75 without the firing pin block on the newer models.
