7.7x58 Arisaka legal for deer hunting on private land this fall?

I have a sporterized Type 99 rifle in 7.7x58 that I used to shoot my 2nd deer, about 30 years ago. Since the 7.62x54R is legal, I'm thinking the 7.7x58 (both shoot .312" bullets) should also be legal? I'd love to hunt with it this fall, for nostalgia's sake, if nothing else. :)

      308 loads for Hoosier deer

I just ordered 100 Hornady 165gr Spire Point Boat Tail bullets to load in my 308 for deer hunting this fall. This gun shoots the 155gr A-Max bullets very well, so hopefully the 165gr SPBT's group somewhere around an inch. Anybody else loading up 30 caliber or 243/6mm loads for deer hunting in...

225 Winchester showing some good signs...

This past summer I bought a beautiful 1965 Model 70 in 225 Winchester. I shot up a bunch of factory ammo and did some case prep work on the empty brass. (Had to anneal them because I was getting a lot of neck splits.) I tried a recipe of H4895 with 52gr Sierra HPBT bullets, but didn't find...

300 blk is it worth the build???

My opinion: I don't see what all the excitement is about. The only interesting thing it does is lob large-for-caliber bullets at sub-sonic speeds. Its a gun without the "bang!"...and that doesn't appeal to me. The majority of my guns are for hunting. There are many cartridges that make more...

Indiana deer rifle wildcats - the end of an era?

DNR: Rule/Regulation Changes This is just a series of proposals, with time for public comments and will not be voted on until next Spring, IIRC. However, if the rifle restrictions mentioned in this new proposal come to pass, we'll all be able to go deer hunting with just about any common rifle...

      Case length gauges

I have recently seen several folks recommending case length gauges to new reloaders. It started me wondering just how many folks use a case length gauge to check their loaded rounds. I started reloading 25 years ago and have never bought a single case length gauge. I have always used the...

How many rounds of 22 did you keep on before Sandy Hook?

A recent thread has me wondering about how many rounds of 22 rimfire ammunition the average shooter keeps on hand. I have never had more than a few thousand at any one time, preferring to purchase them on an as-needed basis, since 22 is always available...right? :( Well, it used to be...

      WTS/WTT: Remington 700 in 300 Win Mag

I bought a Model 700 for a donor action to build a wildcat cartridge, only to find that the stock is not big enough for the bull barrel I am having chambered. This gun is very gently used and in beautiful condition. It has a high-gloss finish. I will be at the Profire Arms swap meet on...

      Reloading sub-forum?

How many folks that visit these pages would like to see "Ammunition" and "Reloading" broken up into two different forums? I'm so sick of the "buy ammo now!" threads that I'm ready to stop coming to INGO altogether.

Enough with the "ammo alert" threads?

I can understand that some guys would like to know where ammo or components can be found, but it kinda sucks that half the threads in this forum are now dedicated to panic ammo purchases.

500 count, 200gr Remington CL PSP

These are the pointed soft points, not the rounded bullets. A guy on another forum has an unopened box of 500 for sale, $150 delivered. These are sold out just about everywhere, so if you use the 200gr Core-Lokt PSP's, I'll be glad to get them for a fellow Hoosier. Jason

      Dillon Super Swager - Impoved!

I have been on record as saying the DSS is a good product, but not a whole lot faster than using a cordless drill and counter-sink bit. I now stand (er, sit?) corrected! With the simple use of a rubber band, this guy made a good product great! :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaZHeSUqQbk

      Specialized 308 loads

A good friend of mine gave me 80 pieces of PRVI 308 Winchester brass. I full-length resized it, trimmed to length, chamfered and deburred the case mouths and then used a counter-sink bit to cut away the primer crimp. I used WLR primers, charged the cases with ~30.5 grains of H4895, and seated...

The history of deer hunting firearms in Indiana

There has been some discussion in the Reloading sub-forum about the recent development of wildcat cartridges that meet Indiana's legal guidelines for caliber and case length, but do not necessarily adhere to the spirit of the restrictions. For most of the last 60 years, Indiana deer hunting has...

Comprehensive list of Indiana-legal cartridges; wildcats and otherwise

I was talking to a friend from Texas about the silly regulations we have here in Indiana regarding what cartridges can be used to hunt deer with, if you're using a rifle. He was truly amused at how ridiculous it all is and I told him the only reason it's not totally aggravating to me is because...

Wildcat development using T/C's Dimension rifle

I was thinking about how I have built most of my wildcats on either Contender, Encore or H&R frames, because it allows you to switch barrels instead of having to (more or less) permanently remove one and set it aside, as you would with a bolt action rifle. I know you can swap barrels fairly...

      COTW 12th Edition is out

The 12th Edition of Cartridges of the World has hit the shelves. There isn't much about it that is terribly different than the 11th edition, but there IS one noteworthy comment in it. They make mention of folks shortening 35 Remington cases by .120" to meet Indiana's deer-hunting regulations...

      303-35Rem-1.8

Ever since Indiana introduced the idea of lengthening their PCR regulations to allow for the use of the 460S&W, meaning 1.800" case length, I have been looking at the 35 Remington as an easy round to modify and hunt with. A lot of folks have tested this idea and found that by simply shortening...

      Action type and press type

I'm running a poll to get a better idea of how reloaders are using the equipment they have and how that corresponds to the action type of the weapons they primarily use.
