Isnt most 10mm factory ammo loaded weak these days?
As in: might as well buy a .40?
I would love to add a Delta Elite to my collection, but I would want full power ammo that didnt cost a buck a round

Some 10mm ammo is loaded weak. Others are Just Fine.

A quick comparison of commercial .40 and 10mm ammo: Hornady .40s&w 180gr xtp shows their muzzle energy of 361 ft-lb. Their 10mm shows 556 ft-lb. Buffalo Bore 180gr .40 is 484 ft-lb, and their 10mm 180gr shows 728 ft-lb. Yep, looks like very little difference to me! A guy on arfcom loads his nuclear 10mm rounds to over 850 ft-lbs, but he's got a custom gun for it.

The perception of 10mm ammo as being very expensive is just that: a perception. If you want to compare premium defense ammo in 10mm to bulk plinking 9mm or .40 then yeah, it's expensive. But if you want to compare premium defense ammo, then it costs about the same as any other.

A quick comparison on Midway shows 9mm, .40, and 10mm from Hornady all at about $20-21 a box of 20.

Federal AE box of 50 is $15 for 9mm and $29 for 10mm.

Cheapest I saw for new production 9mm not on clearance or sale in brass was $12.50/50.

    For .40, $17.50

    For 10mm it was $27.

So for defense ammo, same price. For plinking ammo, twice as much as 9mm, about 65% more than .40.

For reloading costs, 10mm and .40 are within a percent or two of each other. For guns like the G20 and 29 an aftermarket barrel allows switching between .40 and 10mm.

About the only real disadvantage to 10mm is that you can't find it at Walmart or similar places, but it's readily available online and at many gun shops. Even during the ammo shortage when we all were scrounging, I was able to get new production ammo.

So if your budget is down to counting the last pennies then 10mm may not be for a fellow. But then maybe he should be shooting a .22lr then if he's that poor.

Thanks for the offers and info on the 10mm . Had a chance to shoot a Colt Delta Elite, need to save up some more mad $. I have a 40.,it's what I brake out when I want to PO my buddies,it 'll shoot the hairs off a knats ass 25 yrds ,and I have loads that will roast marshmellows at 7-10 yrds . But of course I want MORE power, so a 10mm is in the works.

I got a GLock 20 and a 6" barrel for deer hunting and found it did not make the list. Its a nice gun I reload so ammo is not a problem and Top Brass had a bunch of once fired brass a while back and I got 1000 pieces. I think the 10mm is the auto commnuity f the 41 magnum under estimated. As far as the 45 to 10mm you will need a complete upper unit for breach face etc etc etc

Ok, great rebuttal on 10mm ammo cost.
I was just going by what I had "heard" about 10mm ammo.
It seems that I need a Delta Elite or other 1911 style pistol, with an extra barrel and recoil spring to be able to run .40 through it also.

Can 10mm and .40 use the same mags?

.40 can be used in a 10mm mag. The other way it depends. I know some can and some can't.

Chances are, if you're a 10mm aficionado, you're most likely also a reloader.
If you reload, you can shoot full power 10mm for the same cost as just about anything else.

The cost issue IS a factor when it comes time to practice. If the 10mm plinking (i.e. practice) ammo costs twice as much as the 9mm or 65% more than the 40 S&W, I could see why a 10mm shooter would also want to reload.

    +1!

The 10mm is a reloaders cartridge. Once you've purchased the brass you can reload the 10mm ammo for the same cost as .40 ammo.

A Glock 20SF is the next gun on my list of guns to buy. We'll see if, when I can make that happen.

    I love it, I have a custom 1911 I took a 280 pound hog with and as soon as I sell my glock 17 I'll buy a 20 or a 29!
