I was a sucker and bought a 597 in 17 and paid more than 250 for it. I just kept it and tagged it as do not fire. I called rem and complained about the low offer and only on rem products and just kept it and placed it in the original box and tagged it not to use. Maybe one day they will be a little gem in some ones collection.

I don;t think rem going to get much money for me in the future at least on the new market. I do so love many rem firearms. They just left me with a bad taste in my mouth with this recall.

I fired a couple hundred rounds in mine and did not have any issues, I thought it was going to be a real neat close up ground hog rifle. Now it is just a boxed up firearm.

Not the worst purchase under 300 I have made in my life.

6birds that is exactly why i put mine up. Why send it in for much less (mine was a laminate heavy barrel version) than I paid for it.

I think a few had some major pressure problems. case ruptures and mag explosions ect.

Like i said mine had 200 or so rounds in it and shows not problems but i stuck the recall notice from rem, the shipping box the original box and paperwork and the return shipping label all together and called it a future investment.

I was just doing some reading on this earlier today. From what I gathered Remington's QC was pretty poor on chamber dimensions and several people had Kabooms. The guys in that forum were in agreement that if a rifle had proven itself through a couple hundred rounds then it was likely good to go. The ones that failed did so very early in their lives. Of course you're getting that info 2nd hand from a guy that can't remember where he found it and my opinion is likely worth slightly less than you paid for it. I know it was some kind of rimfire varmint hunting forum, but other than that I'm drawing a blank.

I think it has a lot to do with the bottleneck cartridge.
dirty chamber then slam fire almost from the rimfire primer.
Thats the way I gleened all the info when it all came out about a year or so ago.

I wonder if it is just a Remington thing with their 597 and if another manufacturer did it right there would be no problem with .17HMR in semi-auto rifles. They also specify their ammo, which makes me wonder if theirs was jacked up slightly about other .17HMR?

I had a 597 in .17HMR, bought one of the very first, had no problems with it, but sold it because I had too many toys in the safe. Too bad because it was a nice rifle.

I had an excel arms in 17 blow the rim of the cartridge out and embed into my check...2 surgeries later i called excel..they wanted to examine the weapon. They claimed it was the ammo, CCI claimed it was the rifle manuf. Excel sent me a new gun and I sold it as soon as it hit the door. I think it is a problem with the bottle neck cart.
