While I had my chrono set up for my 9 mm AR today I ran some tests on various 22 lr ammo. these are all single 10 shot averages at 75 degrees

below are my opinions. Your results may vary :)

I tested 5 brands of 22 ammo that is readily available in local stores. That's how I got it :)

American Eagle High velocity in the red box
    Remington 22 Target ammo
    Remington Thunderbolt
Federal Bulk in the brown box
Federal in the blue and gray boxes

    #1

    American Eagle

    Average Velocity: 1194
    ES: 102

This is some of my favorite ammo because it seems to run in all my Semi auto guns. even my finicky GSG5 that I used to have.
Accuracy on it however placed last of what I tested today it was still ok but it grouped about 2.5" at 50 yrds. I will still continue to buy it because of it's reliability. Good plinking ammo.

    #2

    Remington Target 22LR

    Average Velocity: 1105.3
    ES: 69

Very nice ammo, great accuracy 1" or less at 50 yrds. very consistent
I have not ran this through my Semi autos to know about reliability.
    But accuracy is dead on.

    #3

    Remington Thunderbolt

    Average velocity: 1246.3
    ES: 102

This was a eye opener here. I do not have a semi auto that this ammo runs well in. I quit taking it to the range with me due to the grief it has given me.
But since I was taking a bolt gun I thought I would test it out.
The accuracy was superb on this ammo. It also shot an inch or less. There was not much difference between this and the Remington target ammo when it came to accuracy and it's cheaper. I will definitely use this in my bolt gun, need to try it in my pump too.

    #4

    Federal brown box bulk

    Average velocity: 1206
    ES: 80

This is about what is expected. It runs well in most my guns and accuracy is acceptable. Nothing stellar but under 2" at 50 yrads.

    #5

    Federal Blue and gray box.

    Average velocity: 1244
    ES: 37

This is one of my favorite ammo seems to run in everything I own and decent accuracy. Still does not compare accuracy wise with the Remington.

I have never really compared 22 ammo much, so it was kind of interesting to see how much difference there was between brands.

The Remington stood out as far more accurate. to bad I can't run it in my Semi's. It does run in my 10/22 though

I've found that the best accuracy out of my Savage comes from sub-sonic rounds. The Remington green box is dead nuts on at 30 yards (squirrel season range) and pretty quiet as well.
