So upon seeing the article about a local bank supporting the right to carry in their banks, I sent that article to 3 Rivers which has the NO FIREARMS sign on all branches. This is their reply:

Tx for sharing. We recognize your right to carry... our signage is for member protection & not political.

I dont see how keeping me from having my right to carry is going to keep me safe from the criminals who will ignore your "rules"

I know their sign doesn't legally keep me from carrying but their view bothers me.

I agree with you... However, my wife and I still CC in there. I refuse to be standing in line in one of the most likely places to be robbed in Fort Wayne (a Bank) without protection. That is just dumb.

I actually get a little chuckle every time I walk in with my 38 in my pocket and read that sign.

Same for me, never check for a sign anywhere I go because I'm going to carry anyways. Of course there are a few exceptions where prohibited by law. Even carry at the family get togethers, especially the wifes lol.

The funny thing is this, I carry at home, I carry to the store, bank, etc. I carry everywhere that I am legally allowed. I do NOT carry inside my mothers house. She has forbidden me from carrying in her home. Her home, her rules, but like I have attempted to convey to her, when my pistol is removed from its leather, it is more dangerous than leaving it in leather... OH well sometimes people just dont learn.

Just OC to the damn house, if she gives you ANY GRIEF at all, REMOVE all your stuff from the house and go somewhere else that recognizes your Second Amendment right.

    Sorry...I couldn't help myself. :):

You should at least wear your INGO hat into the bank. I did that several weeks ago. The teller inquired if I was "an owner, or a shooter". I told him both, of course.

After he mentioned that this branch had several gun enthusiast employees, I proclaimed INGO to be the best firearms forum on the net. He promised to relay that information.

Oh, by the way, I've never seen any "No Guns" signage at my branch or main bank, but I always keep it "under wraps" so to speak....Kind of a "don't show, don't tell" approach. ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Now that is really funny... :-) Yes I do agree, and the crazy thing is that dad owns guns, he has a beautiful gun cabinet that him and his father built by hand out of this beautiful Walnut. Of course all the guns are unloaded, but still, seems kinda wierd. OH well yes that was a great one! :-)

That's like those CVS commercials where the guy doesn't like what the mom says or does, so he walks out of the house and gets a "new" mom.

After reading Hamerheads article to the Flower Shop, I am editing his letter here and sending it to 3 Rivers FCU as well.

I urge other members to voice their concern for 3 rivers policy on no firearms.

Here is the letter i sent Randy Fillmore of 3 Rivers

Thanks to Hammerheads permission to use his letter

    Randy Fillmore,

I have been a member of 3 Rivers Federal Credit Union for a couple years now. I moved all my accounts to 3 Rivers after being dissatisfied with other major banks.

However, at the present time, I wish to share my displeasure with your biased and prejudice corporate policy about firearms.

I could not help but notice the signs posted that ban the carry of legally owned firearms within your establishment. Because this bank is located in Indiana, your signage and policy do not make any sense for legally carrying a firearm.

In Indiana, your signs do not carry the weight of law, meaning that you are allowed to post them, of course, however they cannot be enforced legally by law enforcement or the courts. If your policy is to limit the carry of legally owned firearms, the most that can happen is to ask a legal firearms carrier to leave the premises, and if they refuse, to press a no trespass issue with law enforcement.

We are given a License To Carry a Handgun (LTCH) by our state. Our LTCH does not require that we carry our legally owned and carried handguns concealed on our persons out in public. We are legally allowed to carry our firearms concealed or openly as we see fit, so long as we do so with a legal and valid LTCH.

Do you realize, however, that by posting these types of signs on your doors as customers walk in that you are announcing to the public that you are creating an environment where your customers are not able to protect themselves or possibly your bank employees if there were criminals who came in to do them harm or steal your property or money? Because you fail to recognize the chance that a legal firearms owner/carrier can save lives in your banks, you have now created a victim-disarmament zone where criminals can feel free to perpetrate crime without fear of being stopped or deterred.

Myself and my fellow Indiana law abiding, LTCH carrying, legal firearms owner/carriers must go through a background check by the state and federal government to own and carry legal firearms. We have never been convicted of a felony, nor a crime with a sentence of over one year, we have no mental defects or disabilities, nor do we abuse alcohol or use/abuse drugs, nor are we prone to emotionally unstable or violent acts. All of these things are required by law or we would not be issued a valid LTCH.

However, you restrict the carry of firearms and state that our firearms, and by extension those who carry them, are not welcome. This may provide you and your employees with a false sense of security as you have "banned the carry of firearms" within your banks. However, you fail to recognize that we as the most law abiding citizens you will find, are the only ones who might give your signage any thought. Criminals, by definition, do not care what law or policy they are breaking when they commit crime, even in your "safe" banks. Not only are legal firearms owners/carriers a deterrent to crime, especially if they are open carrying a firearm, they are willing to protect not only themselves and their families, but generally those around them in the event of a criminal attack. By posting a policy that gives legal firearms owners/carriers pause before entering your banks, or persuades them to not to do business with your bank at all, are you willing to protect those customers and employees who are now vulnerable to crime?

Criminals fear not police, nor security enforcement, but retaliation by the public they prey upon. Criminals are deterred from committing crimes where they may be placing themselves in danger, especially if they are not aware of who may or may not be armed and able to defend themselves when attacked. Criminals try to find the path of least resistance when committing crime, and if they cannot reasonably be certain that they will not be harmed by those they seek to harm, they will most certainly be more willing to commit their crimes freely. By posting blatantly that you prefer your customers to be unable to defend themselves or others, you send a loud and clear message to criminals that they are free to commit their crimes without fear.

I sincerely hope that your employees and company do not suffer the consequences of your hoplophobic and tapinophobic policies (hoplophobia - the fear of firearms or weapons; tapinophobia - the fear of inanimate objects) if and when a criminal takes the opportunity to perpetrate a crime against them. My legally owned/carried firearm is safe when kept in my holster, as are any legally owned/carried firearm. Your employees nor your other customers have a need to fear any legally owned/carried firearm when carried properly by a generally well trained LTCH carrier. We realize that our firearms are for our defense and the defense of others, and we do not as rule brandish our firearms unless we are threatened with serious bodily harm. Our firearms remain safely where we keep them, unless we intend to use them to prevent harm or death. Criminals do not.

While I can only hope that the rational discussion and consideration of your policies can lead to the removal of your anti-firearms signage at your banks, especially in a state where they hold no weight of law. I can only vote with my wallet, and petition my fellow firearms owners/carriers do the same. In the event that I am in your bank where you have attempted to disarm rational, law abiding citizens, I hope that my, or any other legally carried firearm will be available to defend your employees and customers should the need arise, as I will still continue to carry as I am legally allowed, even with your unnecessary company policy. I will just make sure that my legally owned/carried firearm will not be visible to the public. However, I don't see that happening unless and until you decide to remove the signs and welcome legal firearm owners/carriers without prejudice or fear.

    Thank you for your time.

    Sincerely,

If anyone else wants to send 3river fcu a letter PM me for his email address.

    I to voiced concearns.

I talked with a manager of one of the local branches about a year or two ago and advised him that the no firearms signs were not working:). I told him that right now there is a Courier with a handgun talking with a teller at one of windows. He said "that was ok". I told him that I did not see an exemption on the sign for Courier's, Security or LE. (At that point in time there had been a number of bank robberies in the Fort Wayne area.) I mentioned to him that it was of vital importance to me that I be able to leave the bank in an upright position. He said that the bank has hired security to make sure that I can. I thanked him for that and asked him for the phone number I should call to have him meet me in the parking lot so that he could escort me int and out of the bank. UUUUUUU we cannot do that sir. DUUUUU --- what a surprise. Again, I asked him to please change the sign to say " illegal firearms are not allowed on Three Rivers property ". He said that he would mention it to his boss .

They caught the robber. The paid, armed security went away and I still carry as usual.

I think the only way to change the policy would be a major push from INGO with the possible loss of business from gun owners.

I really like 3 Rivers. I started doing business with them when they were the International Harvester Credit Union and would hate to change.

But I would support some action in education.
