So I was looking through some ammunition that I found around the house and came across a couple boxes that say .30 M2. Is that a certain caliber or a "nickname" for something more common. If it is a certain caliber what kind of gun does it go in?

M2 ball ammo is 30-'06. I'm not certain, but it may have been originally designed for the Browning M2 30 caliber machine gun.

M2 ammo is 30 06 (30 caliber-1906) and for the M1 Garand, BAR, 1903/1903A3 Springfield, Model 1917, Johnson Rifle and a few machine guns as well as others. It was the US standard rifle round from the early 1900s until around the late 50s when the 7.62 Nato round replaced it. The black tipped AP ammo is pretty desirable nowadays. Is it in good shape and nice boxes? I'd hold on to it if I were you.

The boxes do not have tops but all the ammo is in good shape. I'm not going to shoot any of it but out of curiosity would it fire out of a regular .30-.06? And yes they all do have black tips!

Yes, they would almost certainly fire out of any rifle chambered in 30-'06.

    :(

Dang, I thought this thread was going to be about the .30 M2 Carbine.

    Oh well, carry on.
