Spent some time with some friends last weekend, and in some arenas the 300 Win Mag is the choice over the .50 BMG? With that in mind any feedback on a $700-$800 entry level 300 Win Mag, looks like the Remmington 700 is fairly popular. All responses appreciated.

Check out the Savage 10/110FCP HS Precision

It's around $950 though most places. Savage has more affordable models too :yesway:

Lot easier / lower cost to get a well shooting 300 Win Mag or 338 LM than a 50BMG, in particular if you wish a reasonable weight for easier carry and use. Of course does not pack the punch of the 50 BMG on larger targets.

I had a M82A1 for years and sold it off after getting a TRG-42 338 LM from a friend (five year trade with pages of stuff) and getting use to the dime size groups at 100 yards vs two plus MOA of the M82A1. While could get a bolt 50BMG, the TRG-42 has been out west and worked on larger targets at a mile well enough that earlier this year got ride of 2000 rounds of 50 BMG loading components (which is a 100 lbs of power, seleve of primers, 1000 cases and hand pulled AP bullets, API bullets and some Amax).

Last year the US Military started upgrading the 308 M24 to 300 Win Mag - Story Here Not sure how much of the push was cost based as easier to upgrade the M24 to 300 Win Mag vs 338 LM and how much was keeping the caliber the same (does allow one to use tracer and AP bullets in the match barrel ... if you wanted to)

Both the Savage and Remington are interesting, I got ride of my 300 Win Mag PSS years ago when got side tracked to subguns, but the TRG-43 fills that gap nicely and goes well with the 308 PSS.

If one had a nice 308 rifle or 260 or fast twist 243, then would look at the 338 LM also. However, the 300 Win Mag keeps up with the 338 LM to past 1000 yards and with some loadings the 300 Win Mag is flatter this side of a 1000 yards.

I have a Savage 110 FCP HS in 338 LM. Also have a 300WSM Browning A bolt. The Savage is just about as easy to customize as the Remington. Savage also has IMO a better trigger from the factory with the Accutrigger. I like shooting both rifles, but the Savage is my favorite for long range shooting. The Browning is a hunting rifle. I'll take the Browning in the field and the Savage to the bench. They are made for different jobs. I can hit 2MOA at 1000 yards with both rifles, but I'm disappointed if 2MOA is the best I can do with the Savage. I have gotten down to 1/4 MOA with the Savage and average about 1/2 MOA.

For me, the 300wm was an easy choice. The 50 was too much- too heavy, too expensive to shoot, required a whole new reloading setup. 338 doesn't have a large array of bullets, it's more expensive to shoot and throat wear can happen pretty quick depending on the barrel.

The 300's trajectory is much better than the 308 and it's just slightly more expensive to shoot. Same bullets as 308, an amazing array! No brainer really. The cost to trajectory ratio makes the 300 a sure winner. I built my current rifle for 175g bullets pushed to 3230ft/sec.

My only magnum bolt gun is a Ruger M77 300 Win Mag, standard barrel. Glass bedded, trigger worked and I enjoy it. Never had an issue.
