I've read that M193 5.56 is the Military Standard. (whatever that means)

I've also read that not all M193 5.56 is created equal. What is the better ammo, in the M193?

I've recently bought a couple hundred rounds of American Eagle 5.56 XM193. But wasn't sure if that was part of the "better" brands of ammo.

American Eagle is good to go. Until I get into reloading, it's all I buy. My Bushy eats it up and it's accurate to boot. Plus I like that I can get it locally in bulk packs.

This is all I have shot through my Rock River AR and have yet to have any problems. This is also what I took to NFA day and has no problems running it in Machineguns, SBR's, Suppressed, or mixtures of all 3. Your good to go with this ammo.

M193 5.56 is made to "Military Spec". The M193 and its commercial equivalants run about 3150 fps with a 55 grain FMJ bullet. This cartridge was never adopted by NATO. It can safely be fired in all 223 and 5.56 chambered rifles. Some commercial loads are loaded light, that is their choice.

It is the Vietnam cartridge and was the issued cartridge until 1988 when the M855 was introduced and adopted as the NATO standard. We all shot M193's out of all kinds of rifles because it was all that was available.

The case might or might not have the NATO cross at the base because the case is also used for the M855 family of 5.56 cartridges. The M855 family of cartridges are the infamous 5.56mm NATO cartridges

The base cartridge of the M855 family is a 62 grain FMJ penetrator round. It is loaded hot at about 3100 fps and this cartridge should never be fired in 223 chambered rifles.

My favorite M193 load is the Remington 55 FMC, followed closely by WCC, then by Lake City.

I have also shot the American Eagle and it was good ammo too. I have also shot some 40 year old, corroded, TC M193 and it was right up to spec too.

all the cans I opened were marked as the 855's......all I ever used on active...I know they'll penetrate body armor....but I'm not positive the 193 has that same capability....I've heard supposedly it does but not seen evidence to prove/support so

One of the best M193 is the IMI at Widener's.
It's also a decent deal at $318 per 1,200 rounds.
Shipping is fast, and the shipping cost is reasonable too.

M193 is not safe to fire in a .223 chamber. There might be other manufacturers that make M193 but it might not be as hot as real M193. Now I know my olympic arms rifle says .223 on the top of the barrel but it has a 5.56 chamber. So there are exceptions.

"This means the NATO EPVAT maximum service pressure of 430 MPa (62,000 psi) for 5.56 mm NATO, is reduced by SAAMI to 55,000 psi (380 MPa) for .223 Remington."
