    Yep.yep..

One of the problems with buying cutting tools from Lowes,Home Depot and local Hardware stores is most of what they sell is junk cutting tools.
If its a worthy project I would order what you need from a worthy supply house.
Brownells and McMaster Carr are both top shelf supply houses.
Theres nothing better than to snap off a drill bit or tap in the middle of a job.
Good cutting tools are money well spent.

Fastenal has a couple local stores in indy and surrounding area. I bought a 6-48 tap for a bomar sight there. Not a tap you see often, and it was in there shop the foloowing morning. The stock quite a bit of stuff and would guess they would have the tap you are looking for and definitely will have the screws.

Another place to try for hardware that has been good to me is Utterback Supply off of morris street.

If you are tapping into a receiver for scope bases, you will need a bottoming tap. The big box stores won't have them.

Just a wild guess what you are trying to do. 8X40 is a common thread for scope bases.

heli-coil it . that way you can change to 6-32 threads . coarser threads hold better .

The issue isn't holding "better". The issue is people over torquing and screwing up original 10/22 scope base holes.
Ruger IIRC recommends 12-15 in lbs.

The Brownells .146-48 is the way to go.
    Anything else is a hack.

Of course one could convert to 8-40, but then scope bases most likely would need modified.
Go with the "oversize" mentioned and it's not needed.

Buy a 50 yr old aluminum receiver rifle..........of how many prev scope installations/removals?
There is risk of finding a boogered hole.
There are no .146-48 plug screws, but you can make those from the cutoff I reckon.
