Bill of Rights, I appreciate your post, and it would have helped, had it not been for other posters - Which almost makes it appear that this "Collectivism" is a matter of opinion, no fact.

Groups of people act in accordance with they're desires = Collectivism, right? Would that equate our American Foundation as such? This is incredibly confusing on what is, an what isnt.

Is it safe to say Collectivism motto is "With us or against us"?

I'm in over my head here. I didn't know that collectivism was an actual political term. I just assumed it was a group of individuals acting with similar interest. I'm bowing out now, because I don't like to talk about things I'm not familiar with. I'd end up doing more harm than good.

I encourage you to not "bow out" but to interact. Ask questions, questions are the way we learn. We learn little from being right, but we learn a lot by being wrong. I want to thank you for your contribution to this thread.

Altruism is a basic principle that holds that others interests are more important than your own. The natural extension of that principle is the philosophy of collectivism, which holds that the interests of the group outweigh the rights of the one. The political manifestation of this philosophy is socialism which manifests itself as communism and other varieties. Economically it manifests itself as a controlled economy, which in itself is a misnomer because you can't control an economy.

Natural rights are a basic principle that holds that the individual is born owing no one and with the right to live his life without others initiating force upon him. The natural extension of that philosophy is individualism, which holds that an individual's rights trump the interests of the group. The political manifestation of that philosphy is democracy which manifests itself as a republican government or parlimentary government and others. Economically it manfests itself as capitalism which means that people may exchange goods and services without interference from the government.

I must be heavily stuck on stupid, because this just isnt making sense.

If the Group's best interest is the Individuals best interest how is there a problem?

Not quite. As was said above:

Collectivism=the needs of the group outweigh the needs of the individual. The individual is subordinate to the group and will be punished for failure to conform.

Individualism=the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the group. The individual's freedom is more important than the goals of the group. There is no punishment for failure to conform.

There is no problem if all of the individuals are free to choose the thing that is best for the entire group without duress.

If someone decides that what is best for the group is no longer best for them and they decide to not go along with everyone else (assuming they aren't trying to infringe on someone else in the group. ex: murder, theft, etc.) then the difference between collectivism and individualism is whether the group allows the person to opt out freely or punishes the individual through force.

The Amish are a good example of a functional collective.
In fact they are darn near fanatics in their dedication to unity of type and unity of purpose.
If SHTF they will be survivors, if for no other reason than they only rely on each other for moral and physical support.
