Its funny that you say this, but not funny that it is true. It seems to be a phenom directed only at things opposed by liberals such as guns. Think of the situation if a guy had run a car into some people. Noone would think "wow, this is gonna make all car owners look bad..." But a gun! Now there is something that should be stereotyped if there ever was one!
This is not really a liberal vs. conservative thing. Think of the following examples:
- "Incarcerated Hispanic youth makes all Latinos look bad."
- "American pedophile sex tourists make all of us Americans look bad."
And even some car examples:
- "The rich jerk who flips people off while driving around in his Z4 makes us BMW owners look bad."
- "He is so condescending to people who drive older, less gas-efficient cars that he makes all of us Prius owners look bad."
All these statements come from a self-consciousness. You know you belong to a distinct group, and some members of your group make the news, but in a bad way. They reflect poorly on the honor of your group. You make statements such as above because you are self-conscious. There is no reason to drag politics into it.
I'm not doing this to pick on anyone, but I have noticed that many people seem to go immediately to gun politics for an explanatory framework, when there are other possibilities. Let's keep our eyes open.
