I have sent my beloved old Ithaca deerslayer to the factory to have a cantilevered rifled 24" barrel installed. So now my quest for a scope begins. I know most of my shots won't be beyond 100 yards but if the gun can do it I at least want the opportunity. I'm am looking at the Nikon slug hunter with the BDC reticle or the Leupold VX with SABR reticle. Both would be 3x - 9x X 40. Has anyone tried either or have a preference? They are very similar in cost and warranty.

    I'd go with a simple Leupold 2-7X.
Up close and fast, the lower the power the better.
To 150 or so..........7X is plenty.
I don't see the need for a special reticle.
The duplex style of reticle can used as a rangefinder of sorts.
Out to 150 one should know their traj and be able to make the proper hold.
Back in the old days of smoothbores and fosters, a 4X out to 150 was easy.

But if a guy wants all that stuff, or thinks he does, go for it ;)
