Computer help needed: wifi

We have a PC running Windows 8 (I know, pity me) and we have DSL. We need to add wifi for children's homework iPad. What would be the most cost effective and useful way to do this?

Just buy a router and plug it into your DSL modem.

My DSL modem has a wireless router built in (Westell 7500 from Frontier). Is it possible yours does?

If not- wireless router, about $35.

I you have a router without wireless, it's probably old and needs upgrading. Or, you could get a wireless access point and connect it to the router. I picked one up on Ebay for $5, shipped.

And for the love of Pete, change the SSID name!

Nothing says "hack me" like keeping the same lump of unpronounceable letters that are the default.
DO change it.
DON'T make it your family name or address.
DO choose names like "nudePicsOfYourWifi" or "FBIvan".

As for a password, WEP is dead. WPA2 is what you want. MAKE THE PASSWORD HARD TO GUESS!!!!!

At my old house, it was "FBI Surveillance Van". At the new one, it's "NSA Drone"

It helps me ferret out the INGOers in the area.
