I bought a factory crimp die for 45-70 off ebay back on September 18th. The seller shipped right away, but it's still sitting at the post office in Sevierville, TN "Pending Acceptance". In the meantime, I was wondering if I could use a crimp die for 45 Colt in a pinch? I loaded up 30 rounds of 45-70 to test, but I wound up having to flare the case mouths because of the plated bullets (something I didn't need to do when loading cast bullets) so now I want to put a crimp on them. I still want to get the 45-70 die but I'm getting impatient. :):

Give it a try with a dummy round. Use you bullet pulling hammer to check your work.

Good idea! :yesway: But I've got a bullet puller "die" too. I hate using the hammer. :): But I do like the dummy round idea. I can play around with it and make the necessary adjustments without mucking up my good rounds.

Contact the seller if you haven't already. At this point it is most likely lost and not going to show up.

It is most likely the seller has not given it to the post office. Contact the seller.

I did contact the seller but haven't heard back. The package definitely seems to have made it to the post office per the tracking info from USPS. I may see if I can contact the post office directly.

If it shows pending acceptance at the post office, it means he printed a label but the post office has never received it.

I'm not so sure. The first status I received said that a label had been created and info sent to USPS. The most recent status says this:

Your shipment was received at 3:45 pm on September 18, 2020 in SEVIERVILLE, TN 37862. The acceptance of your package is pending.

That leads me to believe that it physically arrived at the post office.

ETA - here's the full tracking history:

    Shipment Received, Package Acceptance Pending

If its a Lee factory crimp die. Look at the model number and see if it matches the one for 45colt.
The 45colt FCD will work for 454 Casull too.

I did some searching can't find anything about 45 70 FCD being used on a 45Colt. Like others have said try it if it works or not let us know. You will be posting some good information if it works or doesn't work.

I'll be going the opposite direction (45 Colt FCD on 45-70) but I'll definitely post the results. :yesway:

    .
Takes a good touch on the handle, a little too much pressure and it will wrinkle the case. Colt 45 is .452-.454, 45-70 is .458-.459.

Crappy cell phone pic, but I think they came out okay. :)

BTW, I did get a refund for the crimp die. It was still showing as "accepted" so I went back to ebay and requested a refund. It's been approved by them and paypal, but it will take a couple of days to show up in my account.

I've only had 45-70 bullets move on me once, a load in a Marlin that shifted the fillings in my teeth.;)

Yeah, I was only concerned about the flared case mouth. Before crimping (lightly) it looked like it could cause feed issues. I'm actually looking forward to working up to some of those filling-shifting loads for my Enfield sporter. :) I'm going to go ahead and get a real 45-70 crimp die so I can put a bit of a crimp on them if I want/need to.
