Below is the statement from the Wing Commander. Shaw is near Columbia, SC.

At 1330 on a Friday all gates on base will be open. The 24 hour access gates got the cool "pop-up/stops a deuce and a half in it's tracks" things, this was probably a gate that didn't have one.

From what I could find all news outlets copied/pasted this article.

An Airman assigned to the 20th Security Forces Squadron shot and injured an individual attempting to illegally gain access to Shaw Air Force base at approximately 1:30 p.m. Dec. 23.

The injured individual was transferred to a nearby medical facility to receive treatment.

"Our security forces personnel are trained to respond to a variety of situations to ensure the safety of our personnel and assets," said Col. Kristoffer Smith, 20th Fighter Wing commander.

A joint investigation is ongoing by the 20th Security Forces Squadron in collaboration with local and federal authorities. More information will be released as it becomes available. Please contact 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs at 20FWPublicAffairs@us.af.mil with questions.

Or, the gate was broke/seized up.
Have heard a few bad things about them. Mostly related to not being maintained properly, so of course become unreliable.
