Anyone eat these things? My coworker got all excited today when he found one. So we split it in half and now I have it in my fridge. First off, is it safe? And secondly, how do I cook the thing?
My wife and I had one for dinner yesterday and for breakfast today.
She sliced it and dipped it in egg and then Andy's yellow fish breading that she added Parmesan cheese then fried it in a iron skillet.
This morning she diced it up and mixed it with shredded Cheddar cheese, green peppers and scrambled eggs.
You can find other recipes on the internet.
I've sliced them, fried in butter and then used to top burgers or pork sandwiches. They are tasty.
As I Understand it, the only real risk with them is if you are picking really small ones which can be confused with Amanitas. The link below gives a lot of info.
Last one I found was late and it was getting light.
Used to go hunting them (you have to be berry berry quiet) with gramps when I was a kid, good eats and good memories.
Fried in butter, used like tofu, yum. Slice 'em up like bread and toast them (not in a toaster, though - fried lightly). Great stuff and very versatile.
All puffballs that do not have a warty/spiky exterior are supposedly safe.
