Hello, new friends!

I am very new to gun-ownership (like a lot of people lately), but I am very happy to have this resource. I am 20 yrs. old and getting married in a few months, so a close friend of mine, who I have been shooting with (using his guns) for awhile, gave me a handgun to protect the family I am about to start. I am not able to spend much money because I am also a full-time college student, but I would love to get some tips from you all on general gun maintenance, shooting, or any other helpful starting knowledge. I would also like suggestions on a good, inexpensive carrying pistol, because the one my friend gave me is well-suited for home-defense but is much too large to carry concealed. I have my eye on the Springfield XDM compact .45, but I would love more ideas.
