my two things I focus on with optics is what you are planning to do. You mention hunting and target shooting. What are you hunting and what time of day will you be doing most of this hunting? I'm a big fan of Leupold b/c I like their performance at sunset and sunrise where there's a lot of optical distortion.

For me light gathering for twilight shots and anti-reflection is key in a hunting scope (the latter so my scope doesn't wash out if the sun is setting behind me). A lighted recital is hugely helpful. My rule of thumb, budget permitting, is to spend about 50% the cost of the rifle on a scope.

My Trijicon can't be beat and at a lower price point I liked Nikon but they exited the market (probably available on the used market). I own a Vortex and am not impressed. The clarity isn't what I expect for the price. I have a Burris that was a good value.

I second the 2-12x44 someone else mentioned. I keep it dialed down for a fast close shots but can dial it out if needed for longer shots where I often have more time.

    Just my 2 cents....
