The life depends on what cartridge you are shooting out of it, how quickly you are shooting them and your cleaning practices. I had a barrel on a 220 Swift Ackley Improved that washed out the throat in less than 800 rounds over the period of 4 days. I had it set back twice before I ran out of threadable barrel.
Bstewrat3 is correct about how fast a high performance caliber will burn up a barrel
You also have to consider what defines worn out. Any barrel that will not hold sub MOA in my safe gets replaced. Even if it is on a new rifle with less than 500 rounds. For some people, a 3 or 4 MOA rifle is the best one in their possession.
Velocity is from pressure, pressure has a relationship with heat. The higher the velocity, the higher the heat to make the pressure. Light and medium weight bullets at modest velocity will burn up a barrel at a slower rate than high velocity rounds. A normal .308 barrel will show noticable accuracy decay at 3500 plus rounds, a hot round, like the .220 swift or a 6.5 X 284 will trash a barrel in 1/3rd of that count. There is no free lunch.
