Ohioan here. Saw a thread here when Google searching about a fellow who machined his own Glock slide from bar stock and wanted to learn more from that guy.
I'm very into anything DIY. I own two 3d printers and print some of my own guns and am currently building a V1 Engineering mostly printed CNC machine.
It's a home built mostly 3d printed modular, scalable, 3 axis CNC machine. You can put a laser on it for an engraver, a hot end to make it a 3d printed or any variety of CNC spindles. It uses EMT conduit and 3d printer stepper motors with a 3d printer control board for the linear motion system on it. Cost is less than $1000 for a steel capable model if you don't mind using a Chinesium spindle and VFD.
