    under your bed!!!
I recently picked up a savage edge in .308 and so far really like it. you can get one as a combo with a bushnell 3-9x40 scope already mounted on it for around $330. (I think they changed the name to axis from edge recently though.)

I have a stevens 200 and with my handloads it shoots .5" at 200 yards.

How does it do with two bullets?

OP - I do recommend the Weatherby Vanguard Sub-MOA in .308. I have a buddy with one and his shoots half inch groups all day long. He got a helluva deal on his with an OTD price of under $700 from CDNN.

For the money, I think your best bets are the Savage .308s, or one of the Tikka T3's in .308. You can find some good deals on either one, but you'll find a lot more Savages out there.

i would go with a remington 700. you can pic up a heavy barrel for about 550 at dicks. if you have time to wait you will be able to get one for 400 when they go on sale and have a rebate. i got one about a month ago for 400 there.
