How close does the dog need to get?
A dog's nose is orders of magnitude more sensitive than ours. So much better that it's hard to compare it to human senses. Given the right air currents and the requisite time for the air currents to make it from one end of the mall to another - a properly trained dog could indeed smell a tiny little bit of gun powder entering a mall on one end while laying on that cool cool tile at the opposite end.

Would it elicit a reaction? Maybe. Maybe not.

In "work mode" - the dog would seek it out.

To put it into perspective and to draw an imperfect parallel with human sight - us being able to see something 100 yards away, would mean that a dog could see that thing 3,000 miles away.

Their sense of smell is astounding.
