Mossberg, 590

What is the mossberg 590? I’ve seen it as a shotgun but i was told it doesn’t fit the requirements.

Since it’s a pistol grip and shorter of a barrel than legally allowed in some states.

I think the Mossberg 590 Shockwave, Remington V3 TAC-13 and 870 TAC-14 are classified as simply a "firearm", not "shotgun".

Okay not from this forum but I was told two different things. The first is it’s a non-NFA item and the other is it’s a pgo firearm

Someone could replace the raptor grip with a shoulder stock, BUT that action would require a SBS tax stamp.
Raptor grip = it stays a "firearm" as manufactured by Mossberg.
Shoulder stock = it becomes a "short barrel shotgun" (requiring a SBS tax stamp).

I'm no lawyer, so this input is worth the cost paid.

You are correct in that it is not an NFA item.

The 590 shockwave is all of these things (legally speaking)

1. A "firearm"
2. A PGO (pistol grip only)
3. A non-NFA weapon


It is NOT:

1. A shotgun (no shoulder stock)
2. A pistol (no rifled barrel)

However Indiana law would classify it as a handgun for the purposes of lawful carry despite it's federal classification. We don't technically have to have a LTCH anymore but it's still something to keep in mind.

Common sense tells us this is a shotgun that skirts a few laws, but the government is a stupid bureaucracy.

like others have said, its just a gun (in factory form), not a pistol, not a shotgun.

I call it a loop hole gun, I really see them as being classified someday the way things are going with the ATF

I bought a shockwave 590 to use as an entry to the SBS. I registered and got a tax stamp. Mine is now a shotgun, but was only a firearm.
