Trying to date and value a Remington sportmaster 341. I have a patent #, but part of it has been drilled and taped into, so I can’t make it all out.

The date will come from 2 or sometimes three letters from the left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver. Post those and we can tell you exactly when it was made.

They put all kind of marks and info on the barrel but, no, the U means nothing as far as dates go.

They have anchors and bullseyes and a whole host of marks but in time, if you look at enough of them, your eyes will go straight to the date without difficulty. The real problem is that the alphabet is reused and you will need to know the era of the gun (what years that model was made) to be able to discern the actual year. So "H" could mean 1939, 1961 or 1987, the info Sagamore gave you lets you know it can only be 1939.

Kind of like reading Hebrew, you have to know what it says to be able read it...
