I just installed a Volquartsen Extended Magazine Release & Exact Edge Extractor in the old Ruger 10/22.
Pretty simple install:
1) Remove barrel band
2) Loosen takedown screw
3) Remove stock
4) Remove 2 pins holding in trigger group
Mag Release
5) Push in and hold mag release plunger & spring
6) Remove 1 pin holding in mag release button
7) Pull out old mag release button
8) Drop in new mag release button
9) Install pin to hold new button
10) Release plunger & spring
Extractor
11) Remove pin at rear of receiver holding bolt in
12) Remove bolt
13) Compress small plunger & spring holding in extractor
14) Push plunger past hole in slot
15) Extractor falls out
16) Replace old spring with new spring
17) Reuse old plunger
18) Insert extractor (hook faces in)
19) Push extractor down slot until it holds on first ledge
20) Push extractor until it pops in correct place
21) Reassemble
I am sure the extractor will help because the old one was slightly rounded and the new one is sharp and crisp.
As for the extended mag release, where was this thing 30 years ago? It makes removing the mags so much easier. No more fumbling for the button or flipping the rifle over to find it. This was well worth the $10 or so and a few minutes time.
