So about a month ago I posted on here that I was having trouble zeroing my gun, and that at 50m it was 4.8in low with the elevation adjustment maxed out. Well I kept working on it, and even did some math on it. It turns out, the barrel and receiver were both out of spec! This was on a BCM scratch and dent upper, and Spikes barrel.

The combination of the two together gave the barrel a negative angle in relationship to the optic. Normally as you'd expect, the barrel has a positive angle so that the path of the round eventually crosses the line of sight of the optic, then goes over, then comes back down and continues downward. We adjust the optic to achieve the desired zero. With this combo however, the angle was negative by 8.4MOA. This meant that with a sight height of 2.5in, the line of sight of the optic and the path of the bullet could never intersect!!!! Literally it's impossible to zero it. Your dot would always be above where your round would impact from point blank and out. Here's a table to give you an idea of what it was doing:

So I've swapped out both the barrel and upper receiver. It solved the problem and I've got it zero'd at 292m which is the max point blank range for my cartridge that I'm using (Factory Remmy 125gr OTM 300 Blackout Supersonic)

I was curious, has anyone else ever seen something like this? I'm baffled!

interesting, awesome, and sad (for your setup) all at the same time.

whenever I tell my friends about zeroing optics, I always have to remind them that the bullet will never rise above the bore axis. When they ask for the shortcuts about zeroing at 50 yds to also be on at 200 (etc.) I tell them that it's not 100% reliable (different guns, mounts, out of spec in your case, etc), and that they should verify with shots on target at those ranges.

Last time I helped our local boy scouts with shooting they were all obsessed with sniper rifles and big scopes. I had to draw a diagram (rifle and optic, with a straight declining line from the optic and a 1/2 arc [drop] from the gun) then I think they understood.

Your case is very interesting and I hop you can remedy it (maybe using a 20MOA base/rings, etc?)

Actually didn't have to do anything with the optic or mount as I am using a Micro T1 and Knights Armament mount for it. The optic and mount both worked great with my other AR-15. I did talk to the guys at Aimpoint though to troubleshoot and make sure it wasn't an issue with the optic. They are great by the way. We sat and did a full testing cycle over the phone to make sure it wasn't the optic.

Hopefully I can sort through either BCM or through Spikes to figure out which part it was, and get the issue resolved. All of these companies are top tier so I know it'll get fixed, but it's good to know at least in the meantime I have a rifle I can actually zero.

FWIW, I've had some trouble with that wal-mart Remington 125gr 300 BLK ammo...it's cheap,
it's dirty as all get out and ive had a few FTE's. hasn't happened to me with any other ammos.

When you say, "Out of spec", how were both out of spec?

Was the receiver face out of spec or the barrel extension?

I'm not 100% sure yet, but I am sending both back out to the respective companies and they will try to figure that out.
