Can a Sig P229 in 40 be converted to 9mm with just a barrel/extractor swap? Or does the whole top end need to be replaced? If the whole top end needs to go does anyone know where the best place would be to find such an animal?

I know that to swap to 357Sig you just need a barrel, they can use the same mags. To swap to 9mm I'm not sure b/c they have a different breach face.

I found my own answer. It looks like I can order the caliber exchange kit directly from Sig for $350.00 It really sucks that it can't just be done with a barrel swap.

Bar-Sto makes a drop in barrel for the P229 to change 40/.357Sig guns to 9mm for $200. Their website says some fitting may be required, but everyone on the SigForum sez they have all dropped in fine. No need to change extractors with the Bar-Sto also. While Sig sells replacement 9mm barrels for the P229, it WILL NOT convert a 40/.357Sig to 9mm. Get the Bar-Sto and you will be fine

Exactly what he said!! Also you will not have to buy different mags for the conversion. You can also drop in a Bar-Sto 9mm barrel for your 226(40/357) or 239(40/357). The only kicker is for the 239 you have to buy different mags for the 9mm round.:(

Reps to INDYCAR for his answer. I've got a 229 with the .40 and .357 barrels, and they are completely interchangeable. No magazine swap needed either, on the double stacks like the 229 and 226, as sig1473 says. Just get that Barsto barrel, and you will indeed have all three calibers.

I bought and have since returned the caliber exchange kit due to quality concerns. One of the slide rails was milled way too thin. It was literally half the thickness as the other rail. Too much side to side play in the muzzle. When I called Sig to ask them about it they told me that it's normal, and it will be safe to shoot. I wasn't about to buy that answer and just returned it. After hearing that this conversion can be done with just a bar-sto barrel I decided to go that route. It's been about 4 months but I finally got the notification from topgun supply that the barrels are back in stock. :rockwoot:I really want to get this gun put back together.

For aSig P229 .40 to 9mm conversion all you really need is the Bar-sto 9mm converstion barrel and a P229 9mm recoil spring.
