I have purchased a wood stock to replace the plastic one on my Marlin 22.

I have been scouring the web and found a number of forums, videos etc. on refinishing using stain or dye and True Oil but no references to French Red. What are the relative merits of dye or stain VS French Red? :dunno:
I believe the wood is Birch if that makes any difference in finishes.

I just used a basic 'Red Oak' stain and added some RID dye (red color). I finished with numerous coats of poly. Most will tell you to use tung oil, I haven't tried it yet. I brought some life back, huh? It's a 1979 Romanian, BTW.

I believe that if you dye or stain the wood then it will then take on the characteristics of the dye being color and luster. This will require sanding, staining and finishing...ie a lot of work. To apply the "french red" as you call it, all you have to do is drop your gun and take off running. The correct pronunciation is "french FLed".
