I didn't give this subject much though before I started this forum and people started bringing up the topic. I'm not the kind of guy who is going to go out and construct a bomb shelter in my back yard... but I think I need to give this some attention.

What are the basics for newbies.

I believe the first thing to do is sit back and take a look at your situation and what you would do if a problem developed. If you plan to leave you will only be able to pack so much. If you are going to stay are you in an easily defendable position? So after you think your situation out and come up with a plan you will know more about what you will need to have stashed.
Everyones situation will be different most likely.

I would suggest starting with a Bug Out Bag also known as a 72 hour kit. You can buy complete kits online.
Emergency Essentials has a good line of kits and Build your own supplies.

You can also just start buying a few extra cans of veggies, tuna, Spam, Beans, Rice...
Basically buy extra of what you already use that has a long shelf life.
A good stock of Ammo and a Few Reliable firearms ( how much/many is up to you).

If you want to stock up on long shelflife foods, there are a thousand places.
If you go the Beans, Rice and Grains route, you need to have the equipment and knowledge to use it ie. Grain grinder, recipe book, yeast etc.
