Now back to the harshness of the real world .

OPEN LETTER TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE :

So let's see what we REALLY have to be thankful for ...

Here's Niall Ferguson's Complete And Definitive Guide To The Sovereign Debt Crisis

    Harvard and Oxford historian

Here's Niall Ferguson's Complete And Definitive Guide To The Sovereign Debt Crisis

He has a variety of charts that will put Lady Gaga to sleep .
So I just cut to the chase .. the solutions ... none are good .. all will hurt and in my opinion ..
America deserves it . You , the "plural you" deserve it .

You let the hired hands called the elected and appointed officials
work with out the proper supervision , discipline and punishment for decades to
    100 years .
Absentee ownership of business fail , so do countries and governments .

Pain is a motivator - Extreme Pain is an Extreme motivator and...

it's gonna get fun .. the problem is all of you people that let this happen
are going to drag me down the toilet with you ... well maybe if I get a chance
I can stand on your head as we circle the drain together .

Though both parties leave much to be desired, it is the Democrats who do the best job of destroying our country. (see: Illinois) IMO the only way to resolve this without becoming a total socialist republik is to reduce the size of government drastically to as close as it was originally intended to be. Low hanging fruit: aid to countries unfriendly to us or our interests, shut down the dept. of Energy (thanks Jimmy Carter), shut down BATFE (hey, we did fine without them in the past), close the Dept. of Healt, Education and Welfare. Take a hard look at FEMA and EPA. Require an immediate reduction of 20% for all federal agencies. No social security or medicare medicaid benefiots for illegals. I could go on, but you get the idea.

spec4 the problem is not the Ds or Rs but US the AMERICAN people.
Everyone knows what needs to occur in order to reduce the debt. It's not rocket science. Each of us (even those on welfare) know what to do when you have $0.00 at their is still xyz days left in the month & you are out of food. (ie. you sell something, you just don't pay your bill, you drop your cellphone, etc...)

Do you think those collection social security are willing to give it up?
Do you think those on welfare are willing to give it up?
Do you think farmers are willing to give up their subsidies
    on and on and on

jediah; I'm on social security, but have a hard time calling it an "entitlement". After all, for over 40 years me and my various employers paid into the system. I applauded Bush's effort to privatize it for the sake of my kids. IMO that is the answer to SS.

Yes, people on welfare should be willing to give it up provided they have an opportunity to better themselves. The stories of decades long welfare recipients reflects the failure of government to effectivley deal with the problem, thereby encouraging a continuation of the dependency.

Farming is a very difficult business to be in. Thank God we have enough American farmers who love the life and stay with it. Having said that, subsidies to farmers is just part of a very complex government control scenario.

When I was in the Army, we all knew payday was once a month. Yet many guys would blow their pay early on and mooch smokes from the rest of us or bum a few bucks til payday. Some guys ran juice operations to take advantage of those unwilling/unable to plan. Anyway, like I say in my OP, both parties leave much to be desired.

Uhh ... sorry to tell you this but you didn't ... there is not a 'system " .
What you paid is a TAX , an excise TAX .
As so determined by the Supreme Court .. so what you get per month is a gift from a government that can cut it off at any time ... and if look at the info I gave on this thread ... it just might happen .
    Thanks

No Duncan, SS is NEVER going to go away. Congress will NEVER by the stroke of legislation ever do away with it. It is political suicide. They may increase the retirement age or decrease the level of benefits by a small percentage that new retires get but no one in this congress or any future congress will ever get rid of the program.

More like at some point in the future what will occur is that SS check that some get is just going to BOUNCE or that direct deposit that others get is just not going to occur as the USA just won't have any more money or they will just "print more".

We are at the point where it's just numbers of zeros behind whatever the debt is at. I think we are beyond the tipping point. Even if we got rid of all programs, paid no governement employees and collected 100% of your check in taxes we can not get out of debt in 5 lifetimes.
