Am I the only one that misses being able to top off a bolt action without taking out the mag? On that note, I can't say I'm too impressed with some current mag designs on market. From Savage to Tikka, a lot of them aren't built too great. I do think AICS mags solved a lot of problems, but still feel like they aren't as good as a traditional options (internal box with hinged floor plate or detachable a la Enfield SMLE)

You mean like a Model 70 Winchester? They went the same way as Pontiac, Mercury, Plymouth and Oldsmobile and safe cities. Quality products of a once greater country. Socialism ruins everything.

Do current model 70's still retain the internal magazine? If so, there's 1523 results on Gunbroker right now, even some for reasonable prices. I'm fortunate to have an older Model 670 in .243, with pinkish gummy-birch wood, or some such. It's a quality piece.

I would say that Model 70s aren't what they use to be though...

There is no real reason to top off a magazine when simply swapping mags is faster, which is why the market is trending that direction. There are still plenty of used rifles with blind box and hinged floor plate internal mags available and even some new ones. There are also several options that use AICS mags, if that is your thing. Personally, Tikka mags will do anything I need a bolt action rifle mag to do and I prefer them over AICS mags.

My Steyr PH can drop the mag a notch so you can close the bolt on an empty chamber, or possibly single feed a fresh round (dunno, haven't tried that).

I too would just swap in a full mag if running low. Even shotgunning I don't hunt mult species and change ammo mid hunt.

Yeah but $112 each is pretty steep for mags. At least that's what I'm finding them for online. Magpul AICS pattern mags can be had for $40.
Most Tikka models use polymer mags that are very close to polymer AICS mags in price. I'm pretty sure the $112 mags are metal which is more comparable in price to metal AICS mags. They also fit very few models.

I kinda dig the plastic Steyr PH mags.
Scored a spare from MGW a couple yrs ago at great price
    :)
Yes, I like them too. My Steyr came with 2 5 round mags, ten round mag conversion parts and 5 10 round mags. Not sure I really need the 10 rounders but the conversion parts for the rifle are somewhat hard to come by.
