This is my first post and I am about as green as they come. I just moved to the Lowell area In Lake County from Chicago. My ultimate goal is to get my lifetime permit and get a couple of handguns for home defense. I still work across the border so every day carrying is not practical. My first step is to get some training, Id appreciate any info on any beginner courses I can take in the local area around here. I have a lot to learn and it looks like there is a wealth of info on this board.

Blythes in valpo has NRA 8 hour classes, but they pack out pretty quick. Kodiak in South bend has training options as well, if you are up for the drive. Contemplating taking one there in a few weeks. If you can hook up with a few other guys on here, you will learn alot in a short amount of time. Training wise, here in NWI we are on our own...

Now in terms of training others have chimmed in with some options.
Deb's Handgun Range in Hammond, IN offers a basic NRA handgun course as well. It's a 3 day course in the evenings over 3 weeks. Typically on a WED night. 1st night you go over some book matieral (ie. parts of guns, parts of ammo, gun safety, etc..) and then the rest of the time it's all handgun shooting.

You start off with .22s the first night. 2nd class you do .22, 9mm, .40, and .45 in various flavors of guns and revolvers. AMMO is included for the 1st 2 classes. On the 3rd night ammo you buy but all guns are free to try.
@ the end you also get the NRA basic handgun certificate. It's a good course for beginners who have never touched guns and for you to try a slew of handguns.

Thanks for the posts and the pm's:). Thus far I think the class at Debs sounds to be the best fit for me. Ive been reading the links in this thread along with the links provided by the administrator via the welcoming pm. At first the more I read the more confused I was, but the stuff I am reading is beginning to sink in. After living in chicago the rest of my life it is really eye opening how gun friendly the laws and culture are here.

I finished up by beginner NRA class at Debs. The instructors were very professional and I learned a lot of basic info. I would highly recommend them. Now its time to get my lifetime permit, get a gun to practice with and some more range time.
