Anybody know of a vintage 1911 expert in northern Indiana? I have a friend who is looking to buy one from a guy. It is purported to be made in 1912. My google-fu is strong, so I have a pretty good idea of what to look for, but for the money he is asking, I would feel better for my buddy to get a professional opinion.

Ghuns is right there is a ton of info online that can help. There were differences in the frames, hammers, mainspring housings, grip and thumb safeties, finishes, and even magazines that it's a little daunting. Plus you have the whole military versus commercial thing too.
