    Good morning,

Business will be bringing me to Indy for about a week here soon and I wanted to ask you fine folks if there are any carry laws I should be aware of while I CC. I'm a GA resident and have a Georgia Firearms Licence (that's what we call our conceal carry permit). I see that IN has reciprocity for the GA licence and from what I've read regarding your laws they seam pretty straight forward.

My work doesn't have me in any schools or casinos, so I think I'm covered. Are there any other off limit places I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for your help!
    Dan

Also, no government buildings. But other than that you should be gtg. Welcome and I hope you have a good, safe visit.

Yeah, Indiana is pretty straightforward. State laws are pretty easy (schools, riverboat casinos, airport secure areas, etc...). Local/town ordinances are the hardest to remember. If you stay away from most any government property, you are likely good to go. If you CC, I doubt anyone would even know or care.

Enjoy your stay! Let us know where you'll be, and we can point out any good eats or places to visit.

The issue you are most likely to encounter is the no guns signage in some retail stores/ malls. It's a gray area discussed on this forum quite a bit. Most believe that the signs don't carry the weight of law, but you must leave if asked, or be cited for trespass. A few legal types say the sign is cause to charge trespass without verbal warning...not much case law to support that. IANAL, so take this info for what it's worth. You might wonder about bars, also. You're good to go there, if you think it's a good idea. Have a good trip and welcome to INGO! :ingo:

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I'm normally a OC guy in GA, but I'll mostly be working and walking back and forth between work and my hotel. I figured it was better to CC and avoid any issues.

Thanks for the feedback on the signs. I doubt 99.9% of people will ever know I'm carrying. Signs hold no weight in GA either, but same rules apply regarding trespassing so that I good to know. I don't drink often, but I do eat in bars sometimes so that is good to know as well.

    Thanks for your help!

Also, I'll be staying downtown at the Embasy Suites or the Hilton. I'm always down for good food. :D

Let's look at Indiana's reciprocity statute:

    IC 35-47-2-21
Recognition of retail dealers' licenses and licenses to carry handguns issued by other states
Sec. 21. (a) Retail dealers' licenses issued by other states or foreign countries will not be recognized in Indiana except for sales at wholesale.
    (b) Licenses to carry handguns, issued by other states or foreign countries, will be recognized according to the terms thereof but only while the holders are not residents of Indiana.

In reviewing this we note that you must carry as if you are carrying in Georgia by the terms of your license (concealed/open, type of pistol, particular pistol [I know GA does not have any of this but some states do]) but obeying Indiana's statutes on no go places (casinos, airports, school property, inter alia).

I would recommend printing off Indiana Code 35-47-2-21 and carrying it in your wallet (just in case, most cops know).

    For restaurants, I would recommend:

    14 West

    Iaria's

    Forty Five Degress

Dunnaway's Palazzo Ossigeno (better in the Spring when you can sit on the roof and overlook the city)

    Mikado

    Sushi on the Rocks

St. Elmo's (a classic, people will ask if you ate there)

    Fogo de Chao

    El Sol de Tala

    Acapulco Joe's

    Saffron (highly recommended)

    India Garden

    revolverdan, you are welcome.

You will hear people, especially those from cultural meccas like Detroit or Cleveland, complain that the chains took over downtown Indianapolis. That is because of the hands off zoning philosophy of Marion County in order to re-develop downtown years ago.

However, there are many fine independent restaurants if you get out of the car and look. Looking takes time and effort, kvetching is free.:D
