I generally use the operator/operator II style on my 1911s. I have one pair that I would like to "soften" and slim down. Can this be done, what does it look like when you're done. The pair I'm wanting to do is solid black . Sandpaper? I have modified the back of one set to accommodate an ambi safety with a dremel but the finish wasn't a priority.

AllenM had to knock the texture down on my operator IIs. He said he had to do the same thing on a set of his as well. Love the grips, but the texture was a little aggressive that really bit into my hands with my carry comp 45.

Of course it can be done. I suggest using "wet or dry" sandpaper or file and sand. Finish with finer grades of sandpaper and/or a buffing wheel. Auto parts supply stores are a good source for the sandpaper going down to very fine grits. It's in the body prep/paint section.

I have a set I've been meaning to do this to as I find the texture way too sharp for reasonable use without gloves.
